Casaul Work

Hi all, this is my first post on here.
I am currently employed by the police however have always wanted a job in Driving. I am thinking of doing my class 1 license and wanted to get a feel for the job before switching careers. Do you know if casual work is available out there so that I can do a bit of driving on my rest days to see if the job is really for me?
Thanks

I would say Agency work would be best for you as it would give you a broad range of different vehicles & companies so you can see which part of the industry appeals the most

It is through agencies, but make sure you log all your police work as “other work” on your tachograph.

By casual work I assume you mean agency work, in which case it depends to some extent on your location, there seems to be plenty of agency work in some areas but a little quieter in some other areas.

Presumably you know you’ve got to get a class 2 licence before going for a class 1 test ?

I passed my class 2 licence when i was in the Royal Mail. I currently live near Cross Hands, Carmarthenshire near Swansea. Do any of you know of agency companies down this neck of the woods?
Also is there much difference in money if you decide to do tramping or just work days/nights?

It’s not my part of the world so I can’t help with specifics but I’d suggest you contact any of the firms advertising on Indeed and ask them if they have casual work.

Hello…Hello…Hello…the answer lies in agency work as many have said…but may i caution you, anything that anyone says, may be taken down, and used to your advantage…ha ha …good luck mate, and welcome to the forum.

There are lots of police and fire brigade people driving on their days off, just ask your co workers about the work.

Try some local haulage firms see if you could get your name put down for driver relief if they are caught short, (‘Driver Relief’, great name for an agency both driving and ■■■■■■).
Perhaps some cash in hand work at short notice.

Edit: Oh FFS by ‘cash in hand’ I don’t mean anything dodgy, well I do but pretend I don’t.

Thanks for all the replies guys and gals. Hopefully I can get some agency work even though they don’t reply when emailing

You need to get onto the phone to them, emailing is a waste of time. If you say you work for Police they’ll no doubt have or have had drivers on who have before so they’ll be aware of what kind of shift patterns you’re going to be available for.

On the two occasions, five years each, that I did casual driving I worked for a transport company both times and got regular work. When I registered with an agency I never received a single offer of work and when I queried it I was told there was no work in my area.

Agencies simply like to have plenty of names on their books but as long as their regular drivers turn up for work your chances of getting a call are probably very low.

Remember that the EU weekly rest rules will apply and your police shifts cannot count as rest
