Reviews
My husband did work for Carter bros. but in view of what hapened to him i feel very strongly that other drivers and companys should be made aware of the situation. My huband had been out of work for a few months before starting with Carter Bros at the begining of Feb. this year. He worked away Monday to Friday. He asked about ‘Night Out’ money and was told it would be looked into after the first week, however nothing was forthcoming either for nights out, tolls and tunnels or anything else. Three weeks into the job my husband arrived at a warehouse on an industrial estate at 9pm. He was due to unload at 6am the following morning but the gateman refused to let him park in the compound. Having no money to park at a truckstop or services my husband had no option but to park in a road close to the warehouse. At 2am he was woken by the police telling him his container had been broken into. 33 boxes had been taken. the police insisted that the gateman allow the truck into the compound for the remainder of the night. On returning to Carters on Friday evening nothing was said to my husband about this incident but later that evening he recieved a phone call saying he was no longer employed. He was told all moneys due to hm would be paid into the bank on 9th March. Well the 9th of March has come and gone and stil no money has gone into the bank, even though this firm has been contacted and visited on 4 occasions. part from being illegal to withold a mans wages it is also imorall. This has to beg the question, has Carter Bros got the money to pay what is owed to my husband,or are they a firm that has done this to other drivers in the past. My husband worked for them in good faith, he expected to be paid for work done. This firm have left us in financial difficulty and expect us just to walk away. So i am saying to anyone involved with them Please Beware!
I too have worked for this company this year after working there for a few weeks i was told there was no longer any work and i’ve never been paid!! i wonder how many drivers they are using like this ■■ they have now moved to lichfield ind est tamworth- i had to pay for all my own tolls, ferrys over night parking etc, with the aggreement i would be paid back on the 10th of the next month with my wages. i would stongly advise against working for this company.

didnt know the ferries charged for overnight parking? is this new? i know times are lean and there are some right [zb] out there but if i were you i would be reporting them to the relavant authorities and if that didnt work you could always get a few friends for a marshmallow toasting night to get ya cash
They were advertising late last year for a C+E driver. Experience not required as training was provided. I applied and got an interview.
Overall it went something along the lines of…
Paid monthly by cheque (so in essense 5 weeks in hand)
They dont pay for nights out if you do 3 nights out or less per week
If your running down to Harrogate (I think it was) and you looked like running over your hours (apparently 4.5hrs back to the yard)then you park in the docks.
If your out on a Saturday running back to the yard then that is your own time which you dont get paid for.
You are required to cut the seal and get in for a QUICK check of the load (laptops and computers) and assess from that look that everything is on the delivery load is in the back of the trailer.
There was other things as well.
As desperate as I was at the time for that elusive first start, I figured it was best to leave them to it, I had waited long enough for that chance that I could wait a little longer
Hey Pete-b
I was also employed by the Carter brothers for a grand total of 2 weeks in July last year. Which was just long enough for me to see what the score was with this company. I strongly advise that you take heed of the negative comments already posted.
I had my doubts right from the start but times were hard on the agency so I thought I’d see how it went Big mistake on my part
I was accused of causing damage to the wagon (Which I didn’t) and was also told by the senior brother (Tommy) That I could work 15 hrs every day
The final nail in the coffin came at the end of my second week when I reported that the brakes were dragging on the trailer. Tommy again cast his expert eye over them whilst shunting in the yard and said Nah don’t be daft there fine. Which pretty much made up my mind as to what I was going to do on the monday morning. I was loaded with a full load of class 3 flammable IBC’s for delivery to New Mills just south of Stockport. Which meant going up the A6 from Derby. Not the kind of road you want iffy brakes on
So when Monday rolled around I went in cleaned out my gear and left them to worry about how to get the delivery done. With Hindsight what I should have done was take the motor round to the VOSA test centre at Garrets Green reported the defect and left it there. But I just wanted as far away from them as possible.
About a week later when back on the agency I met a driver who had also had a less than plesant time earlier in the year working for them(Just wish I’d have seen him before I took the job) But hey you live and learn huh
These guys give the Irish a bad name and would urge you not to even call and ask for an Interview. The only thing missing was Spurs and a Stettson… Keep looking even if you are desperate.
Just noticed the original post was in April last year. So maybe not much use to Pete-b. But for anyone else currently thinking of working for them (If they are still in business that is) You have been warned. Wish I’d seen this thread last June
Did anybody actually get paid from these coy boys? they are still avertising for drivers!!! how are they still in business i don’t know. how can they go around leave hard working truck drivers £££s out of pocket!! i for one will not stand for it they will not get away with this i will get my money legally or otherwise, for those drivers who worked for them before they moved send me a message and i will send you there new address and telephone number. from now on i will not be able to trust small operators and will only be working for mainstream well known companys.
it sounds great, i think i’ll apply.
I know what id do if they didnt pay. Take the trck and trailer ar away as poss and hold it for ransom, infact ■■■■ the ransom just as far away as poss and make them come for it…

This would make a superb BBC Watchdog programme - anybody■■?
sadly its hardly a rare occurance though is it
but theres an awful lot of money gone missing, first time round £120K of vat vanished, the 2nd ltd comp owed £125k to the finance company, i did hear that thier “buy to let” properties were not known to the officail reciever…well, they werent, but are now
when helmanns went ■■■■ up (dec 07 was it?) drivers were simply sent home and told they were not getting paid, nice. however tommy had been paid £250 a week just to walk up and down the deck supervising loading and still managed to “miss” items which had to be sent out on vans once the trunkers had gone, guess whos vans…oh, and wayne (ex-helmanns) joined carters with his redundancy and lost the lot in the first collapse…
at least ■■■■ turpin wore a mask

No but in fairness this Wayne deserves shooting with a blunt bullet because of how much trouble he causes.
