Wish that I could oblige Mark, fact is that most of what I took have been lost, think that I left them in a truck. Still have all the memories but can’t post mental immages  !

Pete.

Never mind Pete, post a few recollections of your time on Tilcon if you want, always interested in hearing from fellow tippermen.

Cheers Mark

great pics Suffolk Gold, brings back memories was working for company in Doncaster at the time we used to work for Mowlems & Soil Mechanics collecting/delivering drilling rigs and test rigs to Carsington. One time i had to collect the drilling samples(which had to be kept dry)put them on a F10 with a 40ft trailer and deliver them to an underground mine near Middleton ? i think.Thought i was really good driving a mile underground with this artic ,then saw the giant dumpers driving thru the mine.Good days seems a bit boring now driving a supermaket trolley!

Middleton Mine is long closed Mick, I never went inside but wished that I could have done!
Carsington was a good contract for Mowlem’s, The first Carsington Dam collapsed a few days before filling started! It was demolished and Mowlems then took the job on. Delivering with 8 leggers was hairy at times because if tipping at the bottom of the site you set off down a steep clay slope tobogganing with no way of stopping until you got on “level” ground! It was made even more fun as dumpers ran across the site and you had to plan your descent between them. When tipped you then had to wait until a passing machine decided to stop and pull you back up the slope again. There were a few wagons destroyed on the job, either tipping over when unloading or just totally worn out. The job also claimed the lives of three groundworkers, they were digging a manhole when one teenager collapsed, his mates jumped in to get him and Methane Gas killed all three. They were only a few feet down and were still visible. Very sad.

Windrush, great photo’s , have not been to Derbyshire for 3yrs since last hol there, used to stay at Kirk Ireton, the 1st time we came to peak district we entered Ilam , Mrs SG said “thats a funny name for a village” -“what do you mean” Mrs SG “11 am is that when they open!” hence she does not read the map.

windrush, just read what happened to those lads at Carsington very sad but,it does to some point make it clear why nowadays we have so much health & safety on site.Another job we did for Mowlems was the channel tunnel and early on before the access roads were built everything had to go up (Shakesperes Cliff) a farmers track with just an ex-army Scammell(1940s)wrecker to help if you got stuck, that was the same on the way back down if you started to slide you would’nt stop til’ the bottom.I also heard there were 11 killed on that project,it makes you think how careful you need to be when doing jobs like that.

Ah ha, Ilam eh. I don’t think that it ever opens!! The home of Sellers and Kent transport, big Foden users. They later split up, Bob Sellers stayed in Ilam and Tony Kent formed AK Transport in Ashbourne, wonder if Bonkey Dollocks has any S & K pics?

Plus a few others that you may be interested in !

Thank’s for that link, a few memories on there. Sed Ak FHL 565 V was a Ballidon wagon, Steve Skinner drove it, note the drop down bunk for when he nighted out. Used to take limestone to the London area then backload either with scrap or with coal from Bettshanger Colliery up to Newcastle Upon Tyne, then across to Morpeth area for red granite for the tar plant at Weaste, Manchester. A two day run. I had a similar truck, GWJ 823 V, the comfiest wagon that I ever drove. Beautiful gearbox and brakes and a little more legroom than the Fodens had although not of the same build quality.
Happy days!

Pete.
