Cars in containers are only hazardous by sea. You do not need to run with haz plates up whilst on the road.
kaypup:
you will need dangerous goods shipping notes for shipping via sea
Hi kaypup,
You’re correct so far…
kaypup:
as well as class 9 stickers for the box.
Sorry mate, but there are a few twists and turns in IMDG to do with UN 3166, so that’s not always going to be correct.
IMDG Special Provision (SP) 962 applies to UN 3166, the very last sentence of which says this…
IMDG SP 962
.1
.2
.3
.4
.5The marking, labelling and placarding provisions of this Code shall not apply.
kaypup:
I only found this out a few months back when i collected some cars its only just come in recently as last year they where not needed
You’re spot-on that this is a recent requirement, but it’s possible that you were misinformed, or maybe somebody had simply got their SPs confused.
When carrying UN 3166, IMDG SP 961 has to be obeyed, and then IMDG doesn’t apply to the job, otherwise IMDG SP 962 applies.
Either way up, markings aren’t needed.

I know Dave will always be right, it’s his job to know this stuff.
I also know that when I’ve shipped cars, the box has always been labeled up with class 9 and marine polutant stickers, even though it’s not adr for road.
Took a 20ft box to a removal company in the southside of Glasgow once . and they filled it to point with furniture and then load this Merc in. If i can remind right they just strapped it down with two straps on Off side front the other Near side rear… and then put Mattress’s wedged in-between and other soft furnish’s on top…!! And not an ADR sign or Reg in sight…lol

I hope that bumper pops out when they open the doors!
Ontime Automotive ship a dozen or so cars a day from Fenny Compton in containers. Aston Martin and the like. They secure them with wooden blocks and a nail gun and it is their responsibility to make sure they are secure.
When I shipped a used car to Africa I sent furniture in the same box, a bit like the one pictured above. I had to drain some excess fuel and take the car to the vets to have the wheels deloused. When I picked it up they just let me drive it out of the box and we had the container delivered separately.
