Although I dont think this was his first time driving on the road as he is not that young. I suspect he was using horse and carriage a good few years before that. Complaining quite often of having to clear up horse ■■■ and having to unload his wagon.
Seriously though. What is the oldest truck you have driven? For me it was a 1997 shunter tug vehicle for tuffnells.
If I’ve heard it right Tuffnells shunt their trailers to and from the dock because don’t think that their drivers should reverse them generally ?.
I drove a few old historic types oldest would have been AEC Matador. They could all be good fun to drive in their own way and actually preferred what would now be regarded as historics.
But my Grandfather did transition from team of horses and wagon to Foden steam wagon but unfortunately never knew him to talk about it gone long before I was around.
A 1989 Volvo FL10. I drove it in 2009. It was the company’s recovery vehicle at the time.
On revenue earning work, I drove a 1993 Volvo FL10 in 2005 for a few days on the agency.
Funnily enough, though I’m mad on lorries, especially classic ones, I’ve never driven, or rode as passenger in any lorry registered before 1980. Not even as a child (born '79).
Sticking closer to Adam’s actual question
“How old a truck”, rather than the year: when I was 20, I regularly drove a 9 year old Commer before getting a 3 year old Ford. But the workshop spare was a 17 years old Albion for odd days usage.
.
How many have driven a truck, or any vehicle as old as themselves I wonder?
First wagon 1972, a 7 year old 1965 C Reg - Austin FFK with 2000cu ft Luton body £65
Suffered from bad Hemorrhoids until I bought a Dunlopillo pad to go on what was described as a Driver’s seat, noisy and horrible but indestructible
similar chassis to:-
Similar to the previous but much better comfort and a tilt cab
Sold it in Stornoway, Outer Hebrides and flew home, cheaper than driving and enough leftover with the trip money to buy the next one.
3rd a 3yr old (1970) - H Reg - Bedford KM Unit £450
It was a Bedford, poor man’s unit but earned enough to upgrade to:-
4th an 18 month old (1972) - K Reg - Mercedes 1418 £4,500.
Slow on hills as is well known, but good to live in and again indestructible
seen here in Doha in 1975
5th (1976) - M Reg (1974) - LHD V10 Merc 320bhp £12,000.
Great motor, superbly comfortable, pulled like a train, again indestructible and so much better to live in than a Volvo F12
Saudi 1976 - Same Trailer as above but new cover & paint job
4 years of hard graft to get a decent motor, not sure it would be possible now
EDIT: Note to Carryfast - just think what you could have achieved if you had £1,065 to spare and the balls to go for it -
£65 for a lorry & £1000 for attitude training & plastic surgery so you could join the Elite and get International and ME Work

Bugger…
I’ve just spat out a mouthful of Mâcon Blanc…

I had two Ford Fiestas when I was 18. One was 19 years old (S-reg), and the other was 20 years old (R-reg). My current car is 21 years old (bought 5 weeks ago).
In terms of trucks, the oldest one I’ve driven was 20 years old.
