You can do whatever you want on a rest period. Being collected wouldn’t count as the rest period though.
But getting a bus into town, renting a car & driving home … and back again within the 9 hours, would.
The law is an ■■■.

Indeed!
“the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”.
“If the law supposes that, the law is an ■■■”
“If that’s the eye of the law, the law is a bachelor; and the worst I wish the law is that his eye may be opened by experience”!
The first post was rather rushed as I was trying to keep traffic flowing on the a607 to keep the police of my back who at one point was going to have the wagon moved and bill them. {A1 shut and I’m blokind the diversion}
A few more facts. I started at 02.00 and was not issued with a vehicle till 07.30. Sods law dictated that today was the only day I forgot my wallet and only had a fiver on me. It turned out that my agent had subbed the work from another agency. The client passed the problem on to the first agency who in turn passed it on to mine.
I informed the client at 2pm of the problem and the fact that I did not feel it was going to be a quick reset type problem and would probably need recovery. At 5pm my time was out but a sense of decency ment that I could not just leave the traffic so carried on sorting out the traffic as best I could until the wreaker turned up. It was well turned 7 before I was on the back of the wreaker. The vehicle was going to be recovered to Lincoln. All 3 party knew I had little money, no coat, and that I had been on duty since 2am. The client washed his hands of the situation and left it down to the agency, who basicly burried there head in the sand and would not answer the phone. The fellor who I work for, Richard at drivers plus Bradford was as good as gold and once aware of the situation told me to get dropped off at a travel lodge ring him and he would pay over the phone. This was not possible as the card holder needs to be present.
The client had 20 vehicles pass Grantham but would not even let me ring one of there driver as company policy states no unauthorised passengers.In the end up I had two choices, sleep in the ditch at the side of the a1 or thumb my way back. After an hour or so I got a lift from a top bloke. Called Spencer from Youngs who was heading for Leeds fruit market and a a bloke called Phil from greggs up as far as the Selby fork. I rang the clients office again and as all the logistic co ordinaters and other such waste of space had gone home.
Being a decent bloke Martin came stright down and picked me up. He was discusted and ashamed of the way I had been treat.
Now I do not see anything in the gv 282 that would have stopped me getting a lift up, after all if had been double manning for the shift I would have plenty of time left to travel in the passenger seat. At the end of the day forget about rules and regulations for a minute and just look at the humanity
Just to add I didn’t have a laptop on turnip head its a phone, welcome to the 21st century, and No pav work was too scarce and rates never materlised as promiced so I came back down to Yorkshire last sat.

(Not a qualified lorry driver yet) - this baffles me. When you are supposed to be on your rest period what exactly does this limit you to doing? Driving a car is a no no or something?
Anything you want that is not related to work. And that means all work, not just driving lorries. So for example, you couldn’t go and do a non-driving job such as work in a shop.
Your company driving you home is technically work related. However I agree with the vast majority of sane people in that its a load of bollox, especially on a Friday when you’re not going to be working the weekend and even moreso if you consider that had your own car been at the spot you stopped, you could have legally driven home.
In fact, a work colleague picking you up and them driving you home is better than you driving yourself home in your own car as you can get a kip.

that’s what you should have done,let them police organise recovery & you’d have been back in the depot in no time.
