Carnforth accident Fri night 16/17.12.16

Anybody have any further info on this incident?

What appears to have happened is that a Curries European unit and trailer ‘separated’ on the roundabout between the A601(M) and A6, whilst the unit was turning to the left from the right turn going round the roundabout on its way to do a changeover at Truckhaven.

When I approached just after midnight plod was in attendance the trailer was on its landing legs (or landing leg casings) on the roundabout as if heading northwards up the A6 whilst the tractor was on the southbound carriageway by the Carnforth/Morecombe sign adjacent to the traffic island that divides the southbound A6 carriageway.

Rumour at the Truckhaven was that the awaiting southbound trunker was refusing to take the trailer (once it had been put on its legs - or what remained of them) on account that it was damaged (fifth wheel issues - not just the landing legs) and we assumed an unexplained reason how the combo could come all the way down the M6 only to come apart 400 yards from its intended destination.

One truckie speculated that on the Merc Actros’ there is a design fault where a bolt is on the end of its thread and that is all that is securing the jaws from flying open, the speculation being that this is what happened though don’t know what make the unit was as I was busy watching where I was going!

Maybe the thing wasn’t coupled properly in the first place, with the pin sitting “on” the jaws rather than “in” them?

^^^Sounds about right^^^

It’s amazing how far you can get like that. I once saw an overloaded trailer shunted off a bay, driven round the yard and reversed into a space. It wasn’t until the shunter pulled forward to straighten it that it came off.

Or a bell end like that one on here pulled the pin cos the driver held him up 30 seconds at the pumps.
