Which edition of T&D are these reports from ?

Chris

The Carisio convoy story was in the September and October 2004 editions of T&D.
I don’t know how far back you can order old copies but I found a phone number for back issues in T&D. Its 01371 810433.Hope this helps Coffers.

there running round spain this year the convoy leaves from gaydon after the classic comercial show in june

Thanks Bryan

I am sure I will find them via ebay… :open_mouth:

having just read the second and concluding installment of the carisio run in truck and driver mag, by craig sheer i have to say that it made fantastic reading and if i don’t read anything else in the magazine it was worth every penny i paid just for that one story.
well done craig, excellent journalism (as if i’d know what that is), i know what i like to read and i liked that 2 part story, it managed to bring back some excellent memories of places visited, drivers met, stories told, trucks of all ages and marks travelling many thousands of miles, the good times and the bad times whilst travelling the roads of europe, the intense heat of italy and spain, tilt strip outs in the burning sun, the embarrassment of having another man rub sun block on your back or after sun on your shiny glowing red back because you didn’t ask or was too embarrassed to ask before you took off your t-shirt.

Glad you enjoyed the story Johnny, those old Scania LBs were a blast to drive especially that mighty 141. I’m not a fan of all the Swedish hype but to have had one of those in the 70s must really have made you feel like ‘King of the Road’.

And if you like tales from the old days we’ve got a cracking feature coming up in a future issue of T&D - will let you know more once I’ve been to see the guys in question.

Cheers and safe travels,

Craig

thanks craig, i will look forward to it, whatever it is.

Craig will be waiting with lots of interest

I just got my first issue of T&D, and saw that same article. How old were those rigs? Those old Scanias especially looked like trucks that used to be made here in the states back in the 1950’s.

BTW, is that truckstop in Carisio considered large by British or continental standards?

They were all from the 1970´s Alex

I wouldn’t say Carisio is considered a large truck stop Alex, just a good friendly one. It used to have less parking than it does now but they extended that. There are plenty of larger ones in Europe but not as big as US ones I suspect.

Alex, those trucks may have looked like the trucks you had over there in the 50s but that’s as far as it goes. For that era the Scania LB series, and the Ford Transcontinental were probably the most advanced trucks in production anywhere in the world (in terms of handling, power, transmissions, service intervals, build quality etc) The F88 Volvo was the product of another era, tracing its roots back to the Titan TIPTOP of 1964, but it was one of the most respected trucks of the time and a frequent sight on the long routes east (mentioned elsewhere on this forum).

Compared to the trucks we have over here today they’re all fairly cramped and mostly underpowered (even though the V8 LB141 was a 385hp) but they stood the drivers of the day in good stead and earned a lot of people a lot of money.

the carisio run was a great craig nice one mate . the truck of the run for me was that daf spacecab how about a story about them like the one done on the 143s :laughing:is that orange petebilt still at the daf dealer down the road at arques mate i used to go to damede on that estate there and that motor never semmed to move

Carl, yep that P’bilt is still at the Daf dealer, I’ve never seen it move either

I’d be happy to do a story on the big old Dafs, only problem is that you rarely see them around in the UK anymore; of course if you know different let me know and we’ll see what we can do.

Cheers, Craig

I had one in 1986 and it made me feel like the condemned man :stuck_out_tongue: I had to swap it for a Berliet / Saviem for the comfort.

It would catch pigeons though, but I was only running at 32 tonnes on round timber haulage.

craig can you send me a copy of the article, i feel as i am missing out!!
till i start working again i can afford to subscribe to t&d and am missing loads of good stuff by the sound of it.
i get trucking delivered as the subscription was cheaper and it is still a good read but really miss good old t&d
maybe once i get sorted at tnt, you could do an article on an englishmen working for a french firm what do you reckon??
cheers mate

Hi Chris,

I’ll pass the message on to Dave Y, but I can’t personally send you the issues as I’m only a subbie

As for the TNT article, you’re booked - give it six months and we’ll do a decent story on you. Same goes for anyone else who think they may have an interesting tale for T&D - drop me or TK Dave a PM and we’ll see what we can do.

Cheers, Craig
