Career change , Maritime

Hello all just wondering if anyone on here has made a change from driving to anything in maritime ? Dredging n things? I’m not that clued up so was wondering would I have to do some sort of course or is it the kind of thing a company takes you through ? Cheers for any replys

Forgot to mention course prices etc … Cheers

Don’t know much about the maritime side of things but Hanson, Cemex and Tarmac all wash dredged aggregates at Belvedere Wharf at Southampton (opposite the football stadium). Lafarge have a similar plant at Fareham and I presume Isle of Wight (Redland had one so I presume Lafarge still have it). Not sure whether the barges are owned by a contractor or not.
Trygoogling “United Marine Aggregates” they were a cooperative of some of the big players, who had a plant in London and may have one near Southampton (I saw some of UMAs’ wagons along the M27 the other day).

I could do with a career change, but I wouldn’t work anywhere near that stuff, thick and brown, stinks, and tastes like Sh, and…Oh hang on… Sorry I thought you said MARMITE !  … right I’ll go then, :unamused:… Taxi

Raymundo.

i thought you meant you were going on containers

my mates just done survival course for offshore cost him about £800 + plus £150 for medical, but once you’ve got a foot in the door you’ll soon recoup that money. i just wish i had £800 spare  :

Cheers ppl and no deffo not marmite haha , or maritime for that matter

Usually anything Maritime will require you to do a Cadetship - which is non-accessible for anybody over 24!That said, it usuallly applies to ‘deep sea’ worldwide going vessels, i.e Tankers, Bulk Carriers and Container Ships et al. More coastal or tidal river vessels like dredgers are worth an independant application, as you may get lucky, though some form of proven ‘skill’ is usually required. Going from Driving to this is very difficult if your over 35. Oil rigs are a better bet as has been alluded to above.

Dont expect to becoming home for a couple of weeks if your thinking about working offshore.

Agreed, my lad has done a 3 year cadetship and is away for 4 months at a time, working EVERY day :open_mouth: and only home for 4 weeks in between!

So if you don’t like nights out and want weekends at home forget it.

There’s more than one type of medical, also MIST course, then like lots of blokes you’l probs sit n wait,n wait.
Loads of guys with trades struggle getting regular work off shore ,then others, like a mate of mine get straight onto a platform off Africa because of a ‘friend’/face fits.
Would think hard about spending that money, sure there’s work out there, just don’t expect it to come easy, could be a while before you get ‘foot in door’?
