Career change at 35!

Hello everyone,

just an update for anyone folowing.
Had my assessment with Enterprise today. Went very well compared to my first. Nerves settled down and felt much more relaxed and comfortable. I found the detail of the training a lot more in depth even in the short amount of time I got. I was straight on the road today and had no major issues just the usual getting to know the size of the truck which comes I guess as you learn your trade and hope not to learn the hard way!
I was estimated I could do it within 16 hours but he said go for 20 to be safe which does show the difference from last time. Having saif this i did have a major help this time round… Automatic gearbox! didnt even think I would be in one of those but apprently I can pass and still go to a manual. Now I didnt have any real issues with the gearbox in my last assessmnent infact it was one of my better parts of the lesson, however not having to think what gear/when ect does take a load of and I found once my leg stopped twitching for the clutch It became much easier.= . All in all I think im booking in with Enterprise, my only concern is the test route is one of the hardest apprently. I`m sure I did this route when I passed my car back in 97■■ anyway I think I would get to know the test route very well do some driving in the car and on the motorbike and get a good feel for all the roads ect to give me the best chance. I really could do with a first time pass as at around £300+ a retest is not cheap! I feel I would rarther have an easier truck to drive in a harder route than the other way round I know many may say I should use a gearstick first and I understand why that is but for a complete novice I feel more comfortable this way round. Unfortunatly after 2 emails, 3 telephone calls later redrose still fail to contact me so they must just have too much work to want any more so I would say im done with the assessments now. Lessons with enterprise booked in for sat/sun 28/29 November so if anyone knows the route for the tests or any advice on where to drive/areas to cover let me know please.!!

Well done bud, sounds like your doing well,

Im def going to get some assessments myself as many as it takes to feel confident,

So you can drive a manual even if you pass in an auto ?

Oh just quickly on my d4 form shall i just apply for everything provisional ? just tick all the boxes like pcv etc, the reason thinking better to have them on there than not ? never know what the future holds etc.

I would as you never know what will happen & if you do it now might just save you later as well as money

Great yeah i will tick them all, wasnt sure if you could or if it would come back to me for amendment etc,

I passed my test just after 1997 so dont have the 7.5t, so annoying lol.

If you don’t straddle the two lanes on approach to the left turn at the McVities factory, you WILL NOT get round it.

As “Animal” said at least you have the option if you have ticked them, I didnt but I was just playing safe.

Thanks  will look out for this think we are going over next weekend! :open_mouth:

Well first two lessons done this weekend. So half way through now. Got next weekend the same then 2 hours Monday before the test. Its going pretty good I think  Lots of plus and negatives. Need to slow down on some corners and drive round as now and then I tend to break on some corners, mirrors, mirrors and more mirrors as always! left mirror in particular! just a bit of everything I suppose but I can see the changes in myself and the instructor seems really happy with my progression so going in the right direction. Will be interesting how much better I get after another 10 hours. Had a couple of tight right turns to work on today and heading into Ashton I missed a 20mph zone doing 30 :open_mouth: all bits that others have failed on in tests apparently so working on them now hopefully.!!!

Nice…sounds like your enjoying it…got my theory and cpc mod 2 a week on Monday can’t wait still can’t do my lessons till new year cos of work but it’s getting closer…

Sounds like your doing great biker just take your time relax, slow everything down. Before you know it you will have that licence firmly in your hand

Yeah keep going biker, the updates are good to read.

well done on passing both mate hope it goes well. I plan on doing my class 1 but just playing safe for now money wise. need to apply for my tacho too but main thing is my class c for now. Im in no rush to change jobs but I do have a couple of options should I pass, one is multi drop with a catering company which given the choice I would rarther not do but you have to start somewhere  lets see what Monday brings!!

Hi Biker I am 35 as well. I have just passed my hazard perception today and free passing the multiple choice in the week. I now have to do CPC test on Monday. I haven’t read any recent updates where are you up to with your training? Dave

well done on passing and good luck next week. Just got home actually from my third four hour lesson so well in now. Mixed day today think I left my brain at home for a bit  made a few stupid mistakes to say the least! got told to go straight ahead at the roundabout for stockport so what do i do use the second lane and go right round lol not got a clue why I did that must have not woke up. Did Marple route today, tight roads up there trying to be over to the white centre line enough so on bends i dont hit or mount a kerb but at the same time not going over the white centre line so im not causing issues to oncoming traffic as well as planning ahead forward! its definitely a skill! big respect for all the truckers on here its not easy but im learning and the instructor did say im picking it up quick so thats good. Ran over the kerb on one of the corners for the first time today in Marple. Think i caught a kerb too on a roundabout and before that he said "I want you follow signs for Marple so I immediately headed for Bredbury    After that I woke up and started to drive better, did well through Reddish and negotiated the Mcvities left well and round that area. Driving round bends more now rather than having to brake on them braking in good time so I am not doing it on corners, planning ahead for road positioning ect so good and bad points really but glad im making mistakes now I suppose as now is the time to get it wrong and correct it. Reversing was ok again but kept getting too far over on the approach to the left today but ironed that out. It really is plan, plan, plan, assess, check and check again! so much info to process when approaching roundabouts/junctions ect. Overall I am quite happy with today some improvements and a fair few mistakes but as long as I learn from them its all good. Pass wise im usually quite honest with myself and at the minute it could go either way I feel. If I drive at my best I will be ok but im making more mistakes than I should be I feel so tomorrow I really need to have a good drive and take on board lessons from today. Off to Woodley tomorrow so please avoid that area hahahaha will report back after that. Got a couple of hours Monday morning but I bet that flys past.

Thanks, how did you prepare for the CPC exam? I took it a few weeks back and scored 38 two off passing. I couldn’t really find any proper revision material for it and i was quite impressed I got 38.

Thanks

same as you actually I had the same problem couldn’t find the material to study anywhere, even with the dvla book it was just a guide on what to expect on the day. I got 42 and a pass is 40 so pretty close.

PASSED TODAY! — ITS A MIRACLE!

had a great pret test drive was feeling great then on test my head went and did some daft things. Pulled out a bit late and nearly slowed traffic down but just got out in time. Hard last minute break on some lights and some hesitation and going too slow in parts, not making progress but i think it tends to happen more on test as for me anyway you tend to second guess everything you do and over think. Anyway a pass is a pass just so glad ive done it!!! cpc mod 4 and tacho now while I start the job search!!!

Nice one fella well done !! I passed my cpc mod 2, theory and hazard awareness this am so good day all round
