Cardboard Coppers

Does anybody remember the lifesize cut out of a Police Range Rover complete with coppers sat “inside” which the Lancashire Traffic-division used, placed on the side of the M6 in mid eighties,to slow down traffic, usually around Charnock services, it caught me out a few times when airborne in my 2800 DAF  , I was telling a younger driver the other day about it and he thought I was having him on, simpler times then compared with today,s speed cams.

If they did that these days it’d probably either get nicked or cause a pile up.

Yes I remember them, I think they packed in because they were not cut out for it.

The idea of cardboard police cars has caught on in Ireland too:

:bulb: Here’s a link to prove it!! Cardboard Garda car

In Germany they used to use a real car, albeit an old one,and just park it near the beginning of road works etc.,that certainly did the trick.

I remember seeing a cardboard police car sat on a bridge on the A19 around Peterlee area in the early 90’s.

Two come to mind, one on the old A1 near Alnwick and that huge wooden copper just outside Nis. I always crapped my self when I saw him, even though it was a 10’ British Bobby with a helmet stood near some traffic lights in Yugoslavia :stuck_out_tongue:

It worked during the second world war as well in Norfolk and Suffolk.

In 1939 Colonel John Turner was put in charge of British deception and decoy schemes, the H.Q. was at Sound City Film Studios at Shepperton, in Surrey.

Most films at this time were made under cover, but so good were the film crews that they could make sets look very realistic. With lighting and paint and mock ups of buildings and streets many an audience watching a film would have never guessed it had been made entirely under cover, the main reason of making films this way was the weather was not reliable enough to make then outside on location, film equipment at that time was not so robust as now.

The film men became the backbone of Col.Turners Dept, where they mass produced dummy aircraft and equipment to be used on decoy airfield sites.

I.I.R.C. he was stood at the tunnel just before Pirot when you were going east following the river on your left. Made of wood wearing a British Bobbies type helmet and wearing a white uniform he would of looked better patrolling The Adriatic Coast althought he did catch me out a couple of times when I came around the corner. In fact, I think that he was the only Yugoslave copper who never did me for speeding.

The tunnel was just a bit further along this road.

Hi Robroy,
I too can remember the cardboard cut-out of the Lancashire Police Range Rover fixed to the inner railings of the M 6 motorway near Charnock Richard. The " cut - out " STILL exists ! It now resides, ( complete with flashing blue rooflight ) as an exhibit at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum at Leyland.
Cheers, cattle wagon man.

They still have them at some roadworks, saw one in Antwerp a few weeks ago, still cracks me up when I see one, especially if its been decorated with a skull mask

I remember the cardboard Senators on South Tyneside, there was often one at the south side of the pipe

they still use 'em in Bulgaria!

The Belgians used the cardboard cutouts alot as well, used to see one in the central reservation going from Brussels down towards Lux. god only knows what the point of sticking it in the reservation was!

Didn’t the flag waving mushy along the corridor keep loosing his clothes or did I dream it?
