Card auto-ejecting while driving

Not had this one before.

Was cruising along at 40mph when suddenly I hear my card pop out and the tacho starts flashing ‘driving without card’. I push the card back in and press ok to clear the message but then error codes start coming up. I pull over and clear 3 or 4 error codes, 2 of which read ‘security breach detected’ and ‘card inserted while driving’. I do a printout there and then and find that none of today’s driving has been recorded to my card. I do a vehicle printout and the driving has been logged and linked to my card number.

I get back to the depot and download my card and a D2 code comes up - something about card not ejected properly. Boss sends the vehicle round the corner for an inspection and I get a phonecall later saying there’s nothing wrong with the tacho and that it’s my card.

I’ve had issues with this vehicle for several weeks where it sometimes rejects my card or cannot seem to read it properly after inserting it first thing in the morning. I had no issues with any of the other 8 vehicles we run. Another driver also had a problem with it and couldn’t change to break or eject the card and the tacho had to be reset to recover it.

So is it my card or the vehicle tacho? I’m hesitant to replace my card as I’m leaving this place in a weeks time and don’t want to roll up to my new job on the Monday with no tacho card.

Exact same thing happened to me a few years ago mate. No one at the company I worked at then had a clue about it and it never happened again. I didn’t change my card as far as I can remember so I wouldn’t bother unless it happens again.

It’s not a DAF CF by any chance is it■■? With a Stoneridge Tacho? We’ve had a few issues with them

Check the contacts are clean on your card. If they are - it’s the unit. If you have no problem with the other trucks, then that pretty much confirms it.

Make sure the fault is recorded somewhere then if you have problems later, you can tell DVSA if they query it. A paper trail is always good!

Don’t drive that truck

So I’ve been in 2 different trucks since the ejecting incident and not had a single problem. Seems it’s definitley the truck. Good job I’m leaving tomorrow
