Caravans

I have thought about it, the camp sites here in Canada are a bit nicer than a field in Britain and I have the spectacular lakes of Northern Ontario an hour or so from my front door.

But it comes down to cost, the caravans are relatively inexpensive and I’m talking about something 36’ long, with slide outs and all mod cons for $25k, my pick up will easily pull one so no problems there, fuel is pretty cheap etc etc etc.

It all looks pretty good on paper, until you walk past a travel agents and see a week all inclusive in Mexico or Cuba for a grand a head.

No contest… Olè

We got two, one on a seasonal pitch just jcn 22 M62, the other is kept in storage in France. They are two fairly old caravans, but serviceable.

I’ve never understood truckers going on holiday with a [zb] caravan, why not just cash your hols in and work them. You are doing the same as you do when working… tramping the bloody roads pulling a trailer. Each to his own and all that, but that is the last thing I want to do on my hols.
I know one driver that sets off on a tour and parks in all our depots to save cash :unamused:   what’s the bloody point.

I’ve a gulfstream crescendo :grimacing: does that count as a rubber wheeled villa! :sunglasses:

how many of you actually own or have owned a caravan ?

I have one and her and I will be off in it this Friday for a little weekend away, I was always against them but she talked me into it after a couple of cold soggy weekends away camping and I got the bug now.

Went to Switzerland last year France the previous 2 years and hoping for 3 weeks next year possibly Italy and Croatia.

I set my c/c to 62 so I won’t be holding you up on the motorway.

Here’s mine, the fiver stays in Portugal the caravan follows me around wherever I happen to be…happily retired now
No bingo, no ■■■■■■■ in a bucket, some rain though!

Fly off to somewhere hot, 5 star hotel, all inclusive, be waited on hand and foot, catch a few rays on the beach with a cold beer, back to the hotel for a jacuzzi, and a steak meal with more beer, into town for a bit of fun and entertainment, back to hotel luxury bedroom.

That pretty much sums up my holidays in my caravan, except instead of flying I use the channel tunnel and substitute the luxury bedroom where hundreds of people have been doing God knows what in the bed :open_mouth: for a luxury caravan with my own bed, my own modern toilet and shower facilities, oh and my 20" flat screen TV with Sky

France last year

I believe there are more arguments started between a couple when putting up an awning than one of them getting their leg over elsewhere, and then getting found out

You still ain’t selling it to me bud, all that bloody driving :smiling_imp: …, that is why I take time off to get away from it :bulb:
Seen enough of France to last me a lifetime, and as long as the hotel sheets are clean …happy days.
BTW ‘luxury caravan’ in my mind is a contradiction in terms, a bit like American Intelligence and Wigan Athletic.

It doesn’t have to be France it could be Spain, Italy Portugal etc but as you say mate, “each to their own” I enjoy the drive, for me it’s part of the holiday and as we’ve discussed at great length in the past I’m not a “proper driver” I don’t do nights out so it’s all a novelty to me

Guilty but traded it in for a static.

On a personal note I did consider buying one a while ago, but some how can’t seem to get the Mrs around to liking the idea… Don’t think she’s ever had to ruff it or she’s ever been camping… Don’t know what she’s missing really

Aren’t those cheltenhams just the best thing in the world to tow. Such a brilliant design , bowed sides and a set back axle. My dad had 2 , absolutely stomped along behind a 2.6 litre toyota crown.

Back in 2008 when I gave up the O/D lark sold the artic and bought a touring caravan and a 2.2D Accord to pull it with the truck I sold!!!
Now have a Peugeot 4007 “SUV” but looking for a 2yr old new model Santa Fe.
Have a new 2015 Sprite Quattro EW twin-axle coming next week.
My family plus 5 other best mates families all go away around NI caravan sites 8-10 WE per year AND get our week in the Sun on the Med too.
Far and away the BEST money I ever spent and the kids have a ball!!!

Behind our Volvo xc90 you don’t know it’s there and even behind the old Amazon she tows well . The only problem we have had in 7 years was a flat tyre and it wasn’t until it blew out that we had to pull over .

Got a twin wheel Lunar Lexan EW we tow with a Mondeo. Wife wanted one as she does flyball competitions with the dog and was sick of using a tent and she’s away most weekends during summer.

I use it three times a year for my amateur radio field days but it does a total of 12 miles round trip those weekends. She goes all over the bloody country. Was murder when she first started towing but now can drag it along at the speed limit no problem and can even reverse it reasonably well.

My first wobble box, Sprite Alpine circa prehistoric days, tugged around by a Opel Manta 2 ltr.
