Car transporter companys old and new

Took this one today at Horwich.Watched the driver load it and must say he made it look easy (which i know it isn’t) but can anyone tell me why he left all the passenger door windows down about 2inch,is there a reason for this?

Could be in case they lock themselves which sometimes they do, leaving the window down a bit gives you half a chance of getting in.

I was told just this week that Wm Harper of Liverpool used to take the export car crates from the Standard Triumph plant in Liverpool, to the docks.
The vehicles may have been Commer or Morris transporters of some kind, does anyone have any info on them.

Harpers did indeed Take car bodies in crates, they used Commers mainly , the crates were called Stanpaks, loaded 2 high and 3 down the length of a forty foot single axle trailer with the axle right on the back end.
Mortons used to do the same, when M/T the crates were stacked inside each other so they could bring about 30 back.

Thanks DD66
Are there any pics of Harpers or this type of lorry that carried the car bodies etc.
Any Liverpool related stuff.

This is the stobbie 8 car

This is the trailer I would like to see loaded the bottom deck is very restricted with those wheel arches. Keep the old ones coming Dieseldog66 the Progressive ones are great.

Apparently they tried load trials on this semi at Kirk sandal last week, but it was useless for big stuff.

Peter Couldn’t see how it was going to work too much plus 9 in it.

Took that sdc semi from doncaster to widnes on tuesday, it’ll be back to the drawing board because as a car carrier, the decks are far too narrow, and your right about the bottom deck Ken. It was also electric only.

If I was going to copy anything I would copy some thing new not 15 years old.
Did you have your green overalls on Peter! & give that friendly wave to the spotters not your usual 1 or 2 finger jobs.

Here you go its not on its side anymore, but as its Stobarts it will probably be laying on its side again quite soon
