Our good friend xichrisixi raised the subject on another thread so rather than drag that thread a little off topic I’ll drop my thoughts here. Got my renewal notice a few days ago and as per usual they want considerably more this year. The renewal premium is £362.01 to be precise and last year it was £291.05… …In the letter it stated I was on auto renewal and if I wanted to stop it I’d have to call them… so I did! Long story short the new quote is…£198.23!!! Any thoughts…?
I think…
They robbin’ bustards.
They don’t expect anyone to question their new price. Basically, they’re robbing ■■■■■■■■ who will try anything they can.
I changed my car earlier this year. My then insurers were going to charge me nearly £700 for six months cover. I shopped around and got a full years cover for less than 400. I did lose my no claims for that year, but since I have plenty already, I don’t think it matters that much.
Negotiating a new deal is near enough an annual event now.
In real terms though my car insurance has never been cheaper, and considering the number of miss whiplash claimants, cash for crash schemers and credit hire merchants out there trying their best to extract money i’m only surprised its a cheap as it is.
This is an interesting subject.
My insurers wanted £300 last year to insure a 3 year old Mondeo. At renewal they wanted over £360.
In the meantime I received a mail shot from Swinton insurance which already had my car details and suggested renewal could be as low as £175.
So after half an hour on the phone on a Saturday morning they get it to come in at just short of
£700.
Anyway, I went to compare the market and Tesco came back at £320.
Still over £40 saved, but the thing is I’ve been with Tesco before and they put their price up last time at renewal, yet 2 years later they lure me back in.
My point is, I can’t help thinking that car insurance or any type of insurance for that matter, is all a bit of game amongst these companies.
I bet next year that the company I’ve just left, will come back with the best quote.
But as Juddian says, in real terms it’s probably quite cheap.
The bit on the questionsire which asks “have you taken any further driving qualifications” doesn’t take into account an hgv ticket .
I’m currently pay £230 a month for a 1.4

Try cornmarket, they’ll beat any quote you get, specialise in HGV drivers as well, I’ve been with them for a few years now, always the cheapest

What sort of 1.4? £2700 a year for insurance seems rather a lot…

I used to be with Cornmarket until a few days ago. They have always been half decent but this year they upped the premium and wouldn’t compromise enough so I went for the cheapest with Tesco at £233 for my 2lt.Mondeo.I know it will be more next year but I’ll go with the cheapest again. Not a chance of auto renewal.

Who’s the fool here; the company who can get a customer to pay over the top for a product, or the customer who expects the company to look after their needs when they’re not willing to look after their own?

Agreed.
The HGV , so called Cornmarket discount is complete and utter bollox, its just a gimmick to hook you in.
Ive been with them for about 4 years now. Their renewal quote took the ■■■■ as it always does. I filled in all the crap on go compare and that other one and there about 3 companies that were cheaper! Alot cheaper!
Furthermore, if I changed my job description to lots of other stuff other than “HGV driver”, it made sod all differance to the quotes.
In the end they had to match swift cover of £230 with all the trimings or I was off!
Renewal quote was something like 290 with the HGV driver tag line!
My lot said they were putting all policy’s up by 33%
Went to the nodding dog and got it the same price as last year + free breakdown cover.
You gotta check every year as there’s no prizes in loyalty anymore.

I’m another one who’s paying funny money.
Owning/modifying two of the most stolen cars in the UK cost me just under 3k for the year.

Nothing new there, I was paying over 1100 quid in 1996 for a 10 year old, 1.1 ford ■■■■■■. Young drivers always get slammed. I’m sure you know the reason why. (Not saying it’s fair, that’s just the way it is.)
I’m 26 so not particularly young and 5 years no claims.
It’s more the fact that the two Ford’s I’ve got can be and are pinched very easily.
They don’t even need the keys the just plug a device into the ECU port and off they go.

Have you tried putting trackers in them? I looked into it for mine and a £500 pound outlay would save me about £500 over the next 3 years, but with the added bonus of me getting my car back quickly.
