Car hire with a debit card?

Afternoon all.
As the title really was looking to hire a car for the end of the month as we are off to Yorkshire walking for 3 days.
All the sites say you need a credit card for the deposit,as I don’t have or want a credit card is it possible to get car hire using a debit card or is it a no go?
