Car driver behaviour not class 1

There seems to be a lot of lorries out there that will be driving at a speed easy for me to overtake at 56, then when I go for an overtake will speed up and sit on their limiter causing an elephant race. Is it a macho thing that people don’t like to be overtaken, especially by an iveco? They lose about 3.5 seconds out of their day by not being a prick.

I consider myself a considerate driver, if I meet a lorry that is doing 55 and I’m doing 56, I will just knock my CC back and sit behind them, unless it’s the middle of the night and the roads empty. Likewise if a lorry goes to overtake me at 56.1, I’ll knock off my cc flash him in then put it back on. So it really ■■■■■■ me off when bods will just sit there on their limiter making me look like a bellend for trying a .1 mph overtake in busy traffic. I find TNT drivers the worst for this kind of behaviour

The fact is if I’m being overtaken I don’t want another lorry at the side of me for the next 6 miles. Having space around you is safer than not doing. So for that reason if I realise it’s going to be slow over take I back off to get them past me. On this occasion I was doing 50mph. You shouldn’t need to back off any more from that. It wasn’t a particularly slow overtake anyway.

Agreed, at 50mph the overtake should have been over in a matter of seconds. The driver in the op was clearly a bell end and is a danger to other road users with behaviour such as he displayed.

I encountered a knob in a truck the other day. :unamused:
I was sat in lane 1 approached another slower moving truck, decided to overtake it.
Checked mirror, signalled in good time, waited, and saw this other truck approaching me from a fair distance sat in lane 2, I got a flash off him (off all of his dozen [zb] lights :unamused: ) I was just about to edge out to start my overtake when I thought, hang on, this guy is coming up a bit fast to let me out, so I hung back, …and sure enough he was warning me to stay in as he obviously didn’t have 2 seconds to spare, and couldn’t be arsed to come of a couple of clicks on his limiter to let me out. . :unamused:
So I just stayed where I was and consequently got baulked up by the slower moving truck.

Now I know I’m now gonna get the ‘‘Highway code/flash to let you know you are there’’ stuff chucked at me, and I accept that, but truck drivers rightly or wrongly, have done the unwritten rule of flashing each other out to allow overtaking for generations, the ‘done thing’ as most of you will know.
A lesser experienced driver could have come a right cropper.

This new generation of d/heads are just changing things that have worked for years, flashing in, flashing out and all the rest of mutual courtesies displayed to each other by drivers, resulting in an ‘every man for himself’ scenario.

I’m thinking he was clearly an experienced international man Rob and just confused the uk with Italy where as we all know flashing headlights mean I’m coming through, only problem was he didn’t start flashing 2 miles back and keep flashing

Done a bit of Euro myself, but never done Italy in the truck mate, …but hired a car or a motorbike over there on holidays, so I see what you mean.
Most of them could not be able to drive if the ■■■■ horn didn’t work.

Your right he would have been an international driver but not from Italy we all know where

In certain EU countries headlamp flash means get out of the way, I’m coming through - as I quickly learnt.

There’s so many drivers around these days whose formative driving experience was in countries that look like the wild west compared to us - they are now over here pulling the same stunts.

Is it really? Well if any one tried that in the U.K. my answer to them is no your not, ■■■■ off. Unless your on blue lights your not flashing me out of the way.

its not uncommon abroad that if your in a car flat lit and someone miles ahead looks like they are thinking of coming out to hold you back, then you will flash them to death to bully them out of your road.
it happens plenty with trucks now, same for giving the overtaking lights, and with the amount of taliban driving here now, then its just another example of becoming the minority in your own country.
having said that, then if im motoring along and as above some plobber thinks their about to do another elephant race then id be lighting them up bigtime to get out of my road and let me past before they start.

Everyone is frightened of getting a Braking Infringement or Fuel Wastage, it’s better that you kill someone than set off some expensive KPI management software.

As a noob, if I may…

I learnt from me dad and his kin that a “quick flash” means your cool to come out/in, and they went all over europe/middle East and stayed alive…

Now If there holding em on full beam or flashing like their having a seizure then it’s either out my way or stay where you are coz my boots stuck/dangers about in the form of plod/accidents/acts of god, or just having a seizure and giving the halogens a good work out coz they got em [emoji16]

Anyone reckon this to be a sensible guide to use??

I used this approach on Monday in the pouring rain/awful light coming up from Brighton on my first day and every wagon bar one… (■■■■■■ [emoji38]) out of 100 I were holding up being a ■■■■■ lol said thanks/used same approach for me so I hope it were OK?? [emoji38]

Granted you obviously need to be your own judge but ain’t we all supposed to be proper drivers with an ounce of respect for our own who share the trade with us, and should all follow the unwritten rules amongst us all?

Or should I jog off for being a ■■■ so in which case can someone “enlighten” me?

I do thousands of miles through France, Spain and into Portugal every year and I do it in car, truck and motorcycle…In fact I am perpetually on the road betwixt the places of UK and PT.
The UK is woeful for driving standards, but the Spanish will think nothing of trying to kill you if you do not abide by their unwritten rules…The lorry drivers that is, the car drivers are fine, but the lorry drivers are just plain dangerous and I no longer have time for them.

UK drivers are just drones and unaware, it is up to you to keep yourself safe, as others have demonstrated on this thread…UK drivers are just empty in my opinion, they have nothing, nada, zilch…Just plain dumb.

Like Tude I spend several times a year driving between the UK and Spain and agree that the UK is the worst place to drive that I know, what with traffic density, diabolical road surfaces, and the almost complete lack of courtesy towards other road users.I disagree about spanish truck drivers.i find the manners of truck drivers in Spain and France superior to ours by far and they don’t seem to be wanting to bust a gut all day long.Over the last few years I believe the standard of their car drivers have improved too.The French in particular seem to have adopted their 80kph national road limit with very little drama.Unlike us,perhaps they face draconian penalties from an alert police force.

UK has 208 cops per 100,000 people. France 340. Spain 530. Is that relevant to enforcement?
But you gotta be careful regards counting or not, support and office staff as cops.
Certainly see more marked police vehicles in France and Spain than in UK. That should have a deterrent effect.

Get used to it mate, because the ratio of that type is rising.
I’ve seen some of the most stupid half witted aggressive unskilled driving ever from those wrongly allowed in lorries over the years, and over the last decade it’s increased massively in frequency, vehicles used to bully, seriously dangerous antics.

If I say anything like that I get told I am a lorry driver hater and that I am making it all up. I was once proud to be a lorry driver but with some of the antics we see now (I rarely see it now TF)
I don’t know how so many on here defend the idiots because it’s obviously none on here.

Most of the posters on here take an interest in their work, and are actively trying to better themselves, so i doubt the idiots are in fact posting on these pages, quite the opposite in fact, we have a lot of younger drivers on here, some have come and gone, who are articulate and educated, many of them have got themselves into good jobs and many of them have taught me a few valuable tricks via these pages, this place isn’t the home of the bod who brake checked the OP>

The idiots we are talking about arn’t real lorry drivers in any sense of the term and never will be as long as they have the proverbial orifice, they’ve somehow managed to grab a licence and that’s as far as they’re bothered about skilling themselves up, doubtful they would even know about this forum, if they posted at all it would be to troll i imagine.

Sorry for jumping on this late but that comment is so true, 99 percent of people who have bothered themselves to find out about TruckNet have done so because they are interested in lorry driving and/or care and have pride in what they do.
The ■■■■■■■■■ drivers mentioned are indeed becoming too common and I reiterate the point that these are not class 1/class 2 drivers (I’ve changed that as I’m a proud class 2 driver) they are merely licence holders, and the sooner they are found out for dangerous driving the better because it is only a matter of time before a serious accident or death is caused by this sort of driving

I tend to leave my spanish home at 1800hrs via various routes to catch an afternoon ferry from Caen,Le Havre or Dieppe.I expect to be stopped by police 2 or 3 times en route, the favourite being between Tours and Chartres where the gendarmes are targeting drinkers from a local disco. In 12 years I’ve never been asked for any kind of document.Officers always smile ruefully at the right hand drive car and wish bonne route or buen viaje.
I’ve been retired 5 years and worked 10 years permanent nights before that and only ever seen one police officer and that was when i called him to an overturned car on the A1M near Wetherby. He arrived on scene after 30 mins and despite a car on its roof in lane 2 and various people milling around the first thing he checked was my work records.Jumping to conclusions? Not impressed.

Absolutely! Spot on and I did my HGV in 1979. The only reference to ‘flashing’ in the HC is aka using the horn as a warning but most truck drivers know that a 0.5 sec flash means ok, cheers, good to go whilst holding the lights on means danger.

get a photo of the truck next time and put it up on here. the name and shame .
i named 2 dodgy sods on here a few months back but after a few days a mod took it down and sent me a message about it .
but by doing it theres a chance itll filter back to theose in charge /whoever you mention will hopefully get the sack
