Car charging problems

Hopefully somebody’s got some ideas for me! We’ve got a Galaxy diesel, and last week the charge light came on. I checked the voltage out of the alternator, which was 11.4v whether the engine was running or not, same as at the battery end. Dodgy alternator I thought, and replaced it. Same problem. I then figured maybe the battery was knackered, and dragging it down, so tried a new battery. Still same problem. I’ve checked the connections, earth and main feed, no problems. I suspect it maybe that the alternator is not being triggered correctly, but am at a bit of a loss as to where to go next.

Has anybody else got any ideas?

Thanks, Gary

just ate one and nope no battery :sunglasses:

Where did you buy the alternator? The charge should be about 13v + with everything switched on, lights wipers, heater, screens etc with engine running, if that’s not the case I suspect you have a dodgy alternator, was yours a genuine Ford or an aftermarket one? The charging is regulated by the alternator, if its not charging you have your answer.

You might have a broken lead coming off the alternator. I suggest sticking a meter in the alternator itself.

Galaxy and Sharan and very prone to problems in the wiring off the alternator.

I can’t remember if it’s a multi plug or separate wires but put a meter over them and ensure the meter has a good earth.

Thanks all - have finally traced it with a bit of help from another site.

Basically, the charge light wire had a crappy joint along the wire - it could pass enough current to light the light, but not trigger the alternator. All fixed and charging again - just a shame I bought a new alternator and battery first (although the battery was donkey’s years old, so not such an issue).
