Can't win them all!

Ok, So i’ve been to the open day today and all in all it was pretty insightful and if i get it I am bloody excited on it! But a few things that have annoyed me and ■■■■■■ me off.
To start I’ll say what I have enjoyed,
I enjoyed the friendly staff that did the open day, and gave a lot of advice and made the day pretty entertaining to be honest,
I learnt quite a lot about what i would be doing, and the job of a drayman in itself which to be fair doesn’t sound all that difficult if you do it the ‘carlsberg way’
If i don’t get the apprenticeship, atleast i have come away with some experience and a taste of what is to come in the future and If i don’t get it i wish Carlsberg all the best in the future! Which i’m pretty sure they will

But what has ■■■■■■ me off, Is the lack of preperation on the college’s part and the tossers…I mean candidates had me tarred with the same ■■■■■■■ brush as not being ‘safe’ or having ‘protective’ clothing.

The lack of preperation goes under not telling us what we would need for the day e.g protective clothing, not having the groups split up like they ‘planned’ and had us in one big group which to be fair with this being carlsbergs first hand at having apprentices I will give them the Benefit of the doubt. And the protective clothing issue although I understand they didn’t tell us about wearing steel toe cap boots or hi viz vests, It is common sense to have them if you’re going around the warehouse which was told in an email sent to everyone! Fair enough I didn’t have my high viz vest on but I didn’t want to come ‘over prepared’ because I don’t want to give the wrong impression off like i’m thinking i already have the apprenticeship in the bag.

Now what I am meaning by being tarred with the same brush, was when the H&S manager came down to fetch us and instantly said well since non of you have steel toe boots on you will have to keep on the walk ways and to which point i was a bit annoyed I know a petty little thing, but with how he said it making it sound as if we came unprepared when I Did come semi prepared! Hell i even thought about taking my gloves incase i needed them! It just made me feel crap how i got tarred with the rest of them, when most were dressed in suits & way ott for an warehouse open day :imp: And there was 17 of us!

Sorry if this seems like a bit of a rant, It’s mixed emotions at the moment, But i know that if i get it i will get the oppurtunity to take my class 2 & 1 funded by them.

So positives for today:
Friendly staff
Learned quite abit about the job
Made me more eager to do the job
Made me realise just how sensible I am for working environments :unamused:
And they had a lunch prepared for us so no money spent, other than the money i spent on a drink this morning (Mountain Dew, not the best idea to have before going to an induction   )
It was a laugh and the staff are basically people i could see myself working with

Negatives:
Being tarred with the same safety brush as everyone else :imp: :imp:
Something about it just didn’t seem ‘right’
The college staff that were there seemed abit unorganised which is rather dissapointing
I won’t be on the road all the time as it’s 6 months in warehouse & 6 months on the road
The first two weeks induction are unpaid and if you don’t pass it then, You’re screwed essentially :grimacing:

I’m sorry for the rant, but these things ■■■■ me off when people are judging my professionalism on safety, which annoys the crap out of me!! Anyways thanks for reading, i have my assessment on monday & if that goes well interview on wednesday. A lot more too this but It’s late and I’m knackered and cranky.

Cheers

Jonny

get used to the H&S guys being total ■■■■ about every little thing. including standing on the empty deck of a flatbed while sweeping all the {ZB} of the day off it

I don’t mind H&S being uptight with safety, it’s just when they tarred me with the same brush when I went to the open day prepared and protected.
We’ll soon see whats to become of this yet. But personally I did get rather dis heartened with it yesterday, something just didn’t feel ‘right’ I don’t know why but they just seem like we’ll be friendly before you join us, then when you do prepare to get crapped on :smiling_imp: I don’t know why but i felt they were being over friendly if that makes sense
Have my assessment on monday, if i’m successful I will be interviewed on wednesday and if i’m successful on wednesdays interview I have an interview with carlsberg themselves and if I get through that stage I will have 2 weeks induction which are NOT being paid if the induction is not successful which to be honest, that does sound abit odd, in some sense but i can agree why with another

See how the next bit goes and make your mind up then , if still doesnt feel right make your mind up on that basis always have the oportunity to walk away at any time you not signed any contract see how it goes
best of luck

Jen x

It seems like a lost opportunity to me, you could have stepped forward in shiny boots and stood out to the H&S guy, it proves you can follow simple instructions, an important part of starting work.

As mentioned don’t give up yet, follow the rest of the assessments and meetings.

One thing you have learned is that H&S has gone mad in the UK, you will have to follow it more and more. Even in pub cellars they have rules

Sorry it didnt turn out as you wished but as you said you have learnt something from this & your gut feeling is something not right ( sometimes best to follow that gut feeling )

If I was you would go to the next interview then if selected continue as even after the 2 weeks ( although not paid ) you can still walk away & hope you can continue with the rest of you collage work you will have still poss learnt something but this time it wasnt right for you

Good luck whatever you decide

Tell me about it, I felt like i should of said something but just didn’t something i’ll have to do if there is a next time :grimacing: And my assessments were today something i will later follow up on

I deffinately agree, I felt very different as when i did friday, but i suppose it could have just been everything making me feel glum and not so into it. I have college tomorrow so this will be something I will discuss with my main tutor and hopefully we can come to some form of arangement!!

& thanks for the luck!! Something which is needed at the moment!!

So, the day of assessments are here, and the journey to Carlsberg itself this morning was some what nail bitingly worrying! But i managed to get there a little early… About an hour early !!

To where I got talking to the security bloke and him asking me millions of questions to if the apprenticeship is two years, how much will i be paid, how many jobs going, To be honest i was tempted to tell him, to go and ask his boss if he’s that bloody interested in it, but it passed the time and before i knew it another 5 turned up considering there was supposed to be about 10 of us, 4 decided not to turn up suppose hard work is abit scary for some :grimacing:

I found out that one of the lads that went on the open day was wanting to do accountancy :open_mouth: I was literally like WTF is he applying to be a drayman then! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: Suppose it helps pass the time :unamused: Anyway it rolled quater to 10 and the college people were there and they took us down to the building where trevor (one of the college tutors) decided he couldnt be arsed walking up the stairs so we all followed the same can’t be arsed attitude  We got into the conference room to where we saw tables making an octogon a bit like the pentagon in america with the big tables and that, it did feel a little intimidating but i was there to do an assessment in which thats what I did.

We had to write down what he told us, abit like can you follow orders and listen properly which i think i mucked up on because i didn’t hear him properly on one of the sentences but that’s the only bit of bad i think! After that we had to do this mapping test, given a certain number of drops and a map and we had to decide and put in orders which loads were in order of importance which i think i mucked up on but it seemed ok to me with what i did and the order i had them in! I even said for one of the drops had to be done and trevor came out with you best do it because i’ll be in that pub and i won’t be happy if you don’t deliver on time, I just said well if thats the case unload the thing urself if your that thirsty!! :grimacing:

Then it came to the dreaded numeracy and literacy tests, well numeracy not so bad because I use to be classed as the class calculator in my school maths class. but the literacy :open_mouth: absolutely bricking it! The papers were simple stuff, and pretty easy I had them both done within an hour and all was good. So now I’m awaiting the dreaded phonecall from trevor to see if i have an interview on wednesday or not. Excited but nervous :open_mouth: :grimacing:

Oh & the others that turned up, still wern’t wearing steel toe boots, so much for health and safety eh!

So Positives:
A good laugh with staff from both college & carlsberg
Free lunch on friday so didn’t have to part with any cash
Didn’t get talked down to by anybody
Assessments were fairly simple and learnt quite a lot and gave me an insight that there’s more to it then the eye sees
Friendly lads that were there regarding applicants
Learnt a lot both days i’ve been there and hoping that I have a chance at it! (Considering 75 people have applied for it and i’m still here says a lot!!! And makes me feel worth somethin!)
I will be getting paid monthly not weekly so £1k each month suits me fine :grimacing:
The two days at carlsberg has showed how safe and mature I am about being in these kind of environments
Two days off college away from annoying students   :imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:
Its experience at the end of it, whether i get it or not. Just a case of enjoying what i can! :grimacing:

Negatives:
Friday was a bit of an off day which made me feel a bit dis heartened
The lunch that was provided made me feel ill, if carlsberg did lunch it would probably be the…  Yeah thats a lie, as is the beer!
Transport is a buggar early mornings, and if i get this apprenticeship I’m going to struggle to get there without my own transport which I am going to have to discuss with them, even if it means taking it from my wages i really don’t care
Feel like I’m nagging about safety but if I have to wear safety stuff then so should everyone else :smiling_imp: :imp:
Actually wanted to do some work, but couldn’t just have to wait :grimacing:

Anyway thats the news so far ladies and gents. Will keep you all updated as soon as i hear anything and i’ll be sure to keep my ‘diary’ going :grimacing:

Cheers

Jonny

Well, Just had the phone call,

Unfortunately i’ve not got the apprenticeship, but hell what an experience :grimacing:

Indeed i am gutted, would’ve bloody loved to be doing the early work and that, but unfortunately this specific occasion it wasn’t mean to be. For the rest of them, i wish them all the best of luck and i hope carlsberg the best for the future

I on the other hand, basically see it like this. I applied for an apprenticeship, out of 75 i was hand picked to be a participant and i got to the assessment stage. Great experience and i’ve learnt alot and even though i got knocked back it’s just making me want to do better and be more determined in the future!!

Ahwell I still have thursday to go yet to try sort me out with an apprenticeship!!

Keep your chins up folks, don’t be too dissapointed i didn’t get it, theres always next time!!
