Ok, So i’ve been to the open day today and all in all it was pretty insightful and if i get it I am bloody excited on it! But a few things that have annoyed me and ■■■■■■ me off.
To start I’ll say what I have enjoyed,
I enjoyed the friendly staff that did the open day, and gave a lot of advice and made the day pretty entertaining to be honest,
I learnt quite a lot about what i would be doing, and the job of a drayman in itself which to be fair doesn’t sound all that difficult if you do it the ‘carlsberg way’
If i don’t get the apprenticeship, atleast i have come away with some experience and a taste of what is to come in the future and If i don’t get it i wish Carlsberg all the best in the future! Which i’m pretty sure they will
But what has ■■■■■■ me off, Is the lack of preperation on the college’s part and the tossers…I mean candidates had me tarred with the same ■■■■■■■ brush as not being ‘safe’ or having ‘protective’ clothing.
The lack of preperation goes under not telling us what we would need for the day e.g protective clothing, not having the groups split up like they ‘planned’ and had us in one big group which to be fair with this being carlsbergs first hand at having apprentices I will give them the Benefit of the doubt. And the protective clothing issue although I understand they didn’t tell us about wearing steel toe cap boots or hi viz vests, It is common sense to have them if you’re going around the warehouse which was told in an email sent to everyone! Fair enough I didn’t have my high viz vest on but I didn’t want to come ‘over prepared’ because I don’t want to give the wrong impression off like i’m thinking i already have the apprenticeship in the bag.
Now what I am meaning by being tarred with the same brush, was when the H&S manager came down to fetch us and instantly said well since non of you have steel toe boots on you will have to keep on the walk ways and to which point i was a bit annoyed I know a petty little thing, but with how he said it making it sound as if we came unprepared when I Did come semi prepared! Hell i even thought about taking my gloves incase i needed them! It just made me feel crap how i got tarred with the rest of them, when most were dressed in suits & way ott for an warehouse open day And there was 17 of us!
Sorry if this seems like a bit of a rant, It’s mixed emotions at the moment, But i know that if i get it i will get the oppurtunity to take my class 2 & 1 funded by them.
So positives for today:
Friendly staff
Learned quite abit about the job
Made me more eager to do the job
Made me realise just how sensible I am for working environments
And they had a lunch prepared for us so no money spent, other than the money i spent on a drink this morning (Mountain Dew, not the best idea to have before going to an induction
)
It was a laugh and the staff are basically people i could see myself working with
Negatives:
Being tarred with the same safety brush as everyone else
Something about it just didn’t seem ‘right’
The college staff that were there seemed abit unorganised which is rather dissapointing
I won’t be on the road all the time as it’s 6 months in warehouse & 6 months on the road
The first two weeks induction are unpaid and if you don’t pass it then, You’re screwed essentially
I’m sorry for the rant, but these things ■■■■ me off when people are judging my professionalism on safety, which annoys the crap out of me!! Anyways thanks for reading, i have my assessment on monday & if that goes well interview on wednesday. A lot more too this but It’s late and I’m knackered and cranky.
Cheers
Jonny
