Hi guys im a newbie on here
I have just started the process to become a hgv driver. I am currently pursuing my provisional theory and hazard perception so still a long way off my dream job.
I have wanted to be a lorry driver for as long as I can remember but due to having 3 lovely children and few not so rewarding jobs I have been unable to save to much for it so now I feel its about time I got started on it. not only that im feeling a bit left out as two of my friends are hgv drivers and my brother is a coach driver.
So as I am fed up of dead end jobs its time to take the plunge for a career I know I will enjoy
We are planning to move feb/march time to Lancaster Lancashire (to be closer to family) and the place that got my attention most is SJ Barghs I have heard there a good company to work for by one or two people. Is there anyone on here that works for them that could tell me anymore about the place and what there like to work for â â
Any hints or tips on the next phase is most welcome to cheers guys

Good luck mate. Where abouts in the Shire are you? Iâm in Sleaford and did my class 2 with SDS in Swinderby, but am doing my Class 1 elsewhere.
Cheers mate im in skegness how did you get on there ? When i first called boston lgv the guy was a bit funny on the phone i said i just wanted a info pack and a price for theory and hazard perception without the training pack as i bought that feb this year. and he said âYOUR NO GOOD TO ME MATE!!!â âHURRY UP AND GIVE ME YOUR ADDRESS THEN IV GOT LADS WAITING!!!â Now i understand people have there bad days hand he may well have been very busy but it dont fill me with much confidence when im spoken to like that by somone your going to be spending over ÂŁ2000+ with
Iâm from Lincoln, went with a broker first time around, horrible experience. Paid for my retest out of my own money, went with Peter Smythe in Mansfield. Cracking operation they have. Kit is all tip top and the trainers are excellent. Prices are a little higher than most but its well worth it. I had a chap called Chris, he didnât scream or shout which made me feel a lot calmer behind the wheel. The Ivecco units they have are pretty much all brand new, just watch the brakes on them as they are progressive which is a little unnerving when you first start as it will seem like the brakes arenât doing anything but gentle even pressure on the pedal and you will get the hang of it.
They have their own reversing area which is on a slight decline so you can (being cheeky here) let it gently roll backwards which makes things a little easier. Chris said to me that I only need one complete turn of the wheel to get it into the bay, didnât believe him at first but he was right! I was nowhere near the line as I was backing in and I got it in one. Since its all auto you can really focus on your positioning and road awareness without having the worry of the gears.
All in all, well worth the price and the travel time.

I have to say mate Angie at SDS was really helpful, she was happy to chat with me and explain I could pay less elsewhere, but Iâd get less training. Give her a call mate see what you think. Sheâs a good teacher, patient but if you keep making silly mistakes youâll know about it!! Youâve also got Denbys in Lincoln who are supposed to be good. As you say if someone talked to me like that Iâd go elsewhere as a matter of principle, itâs a serious investment, so shop around. You won;t be paying that amount with SDS. I passed third time fwiw. Iâm going with Peter Smythe for my Class 1 mostly because with SDS you are spending over 2 hours each day getting to Grimsby and back.
I have just requested info pack with SDS I think I might get on better with a women lol ( I mean that in the nicest way possible!!) but my boss at the moment is a women and I feel a bigger idiot if im being told off by her than any of the the male bossesâŚ
and being a family man iv learnt to listen and speak when spoken to lol.
on the other hand peter seems a nice chap plus theres somewhere to stay for the week if required why your training he is sending me an info pack tooâŚ
