Can't get my head round these definitions

Category C1

You can drive vehicles between 3,500 and 7,500kg MAM (with a trailer up to 750kg)

Category C

You can drive vehicles over 3,500kg (with a trailer up to 750kg MAM).

So… why the cross over, a 5000kg tuck could be either cat.

Thanks…

Category C

You can drive vehicles over 3,500kg and up to any size of Rigid (i.e. 32 tons), towing a trailer of a max of (750kg MAM).

So… why the cross over, a 5000kg tuck could be either cat.

Does that help?

Your over thinking and confusing your self
C1 allows you to drive 3500kg to 7500kg
C allows you to drive 7501kg up wards as long as it’s a rigid truck or a tractor unit no trailer
You have to pass a C1 before you can get your C and like wise for C+E

From what I recall you can go straight to cat C rather than take c1 unless things have changed.

You need to have a full car licence obviously

Yes straight to cat c .just did it.

C1 is a subcategory of C so a 5 tonne GVW truck will be covered by either/both

I did do my Van 15 years ago :open_mouth: in a 10t 10ft 6 speed Iveco flatbed :grimacing:

That’s great, sorted, thanks.

For simplicity, I describe it as C is the category for a rigid goods vehicle. Put a “1” after it and it makes it a “little 1”. (up to 7500 kgs) Rarely do folks get involved in the trailer bit so sometimes best not mentioned. But stick an “E” after the “C” and that covers for the vehicle and any trailer - in other words, artic or drawbar.

Could make it more complicated but that works for most folks.

Same applies to D for passenger vehicles.

Hope this helps, Pete
