Are you allowed to use things such as speed limiter to set your max speed to 40mph on sc roads and exhaust break and cruise control on a test? Passed my class 2 a while back and never asked at the time. Thinking of going for my class 1 now and was just wondering if using the speed limiter would be seen as cheating because you don’t need to be constantly checking your speed if you use the limiter as well as the constant mirror checks
I would have thought you’d get brownie points for doing so. It shows you know your vehicle and have good control and understanding of using it.
Manufacturers dont fit these ‘mod cons’ to not be used.
I used both the cruise control and the exhaust brake on my test last week and nothing was said about it.
I agree with M1cks, it shows that you know your vehicle and how to use its equipment.
I used cruise control and the exhaust brake when i passed the class C. The examiner actually commented how i was the first person to use the exhaust brake in X amount of weeks or months. Defo was a plus mark rather than a negative.
I used cruise control on my cat C test but was told that I wasn’t allowed to by my instructor when I did my C+E… They were about 8 months apart so I don’t know if the rules changed or not. :\
Gadgets such as variable speed limiter, cruise, exhaust brake are all fitted to the vehicle to improve vehicle/driver performance. On a test there is absolutely no penalty or credit for using or not using any of them. It’s totally up to the driver.
It is remotely possible to gain a negative mark for incorrect/inappropriate use of these controls. I emphasise, remotely possible.
Some trainers encourage their use, others don’t. Neither is right or wrong.
It’s “please yourself” time!
Hope this helps, Pete
Now the trucks are part laden I encourage my students to make use of the exhaust brake especially when going down hill.
