Don’t know about a £2 meal in 2015. I was at a meeting in London in 2012 and when I left the hotel a homeless bloke outside said to me, “Can I have 50p for a hot meal mate?” I said, “Bloody hell mate if you can get a meal for 50p I’ll come with you and pay for us both.” He called me a tight ■■■■■■■■■

HMRC allow employers to pay £2 a day tax-free to employees for a mid-day meal allowance (more in some circumstances) which is why that amount is offered in the advert. I pay myself this allowance (I’m an employee of my own limited company) and it means I pay 40p less tax than if I paid myself £2 as wages. Over the course of a year, say 250 working days, it adds up to £100 so it’s worth having.
As for whether you can get an actual meal for £2, well not in many places and HMRC haven’t raised the amount for years. If anything I think they would like to get rid of it.
OVLOV JAY:
You can get a breakfast meal deal in greggs for £2, but they rip you off for £3 on the motorway
Not sure who else is aware of this but I’ve been going to the Spar petrol station at the services if there is one. Went there once to fuel up (as I’m a new guy I assumed most motorway services would be KeyFuels - turns out they are not - but why have HGV fuel pumps?!) but I’ve been getting the £3.50 meal deals when I’m short of food. Butty, Crisps & Spar Drink £3.50 seems to normally be a hell of a lot less than the main services buildings.
