Can we do this?

Not sure if it’s what happened here but the bus in question is a Dennis Dart, and this particular model had an extremely dangerous design fault on the early models, in that the accelerator pedal sat lower than the brake but was positioned very close, meaning if the foot slipped it usually propelled the bus forward at breakneck speed, with the most infamous occurrence being in Sunderland, which resulted in the death of 2 women.

Even not allowing for that, I’ve driven that type of bus many times, and they can be very snappy on the throttle when pulling away. Still, it’s one less Porsche on the road

Ive driven Darts at Stagecoach (and the replacement model - the Enviro 200) and whilst driving a Dart Ive actually had the accelerator pedal jam on, so that may explain what happened there but also may not

I’ve never had the throttle jam on whilst driving a dart, the opposite, the bloody thing not working, and also a failed handbrake where it just popped off whilst dealing with something and that was it, the bus was off. Had I been in the same position as that driver when the handbrake came off, I could easily have done what he did.

where i worked they converted all the darts to “air throttles” to prevent them from jamming! i had one jam WIDE open once, but luckily i managed to stop it using the brake and handbrake! by the time i’d composed myself the transmission was damaged! Still, I have a soft spot for the old darts, they are a GREAT bus, really reliable, good to drive, maneuverable, and apparently good on diesel aswell!

heres one of favorite old girls! took by me last year when i was on a late turn!

I only just noticed your location.

We may have worked together if you’ve been at it a while, I started in 2000, worked my way around most of the bus and coach companies in Gt. Manchester, then jacked it and went onto HGV’s around 2006 / 2007.
