Am thinking of getting a 7.5t box lorry to use to store and transport film/tv props to exhibitions
would I be able to classify the lorry as a showmans vehicle on that basis
I may even add a sleeping area for stop overs if that changes anything.
Most exhibitions will be for free at places like schools, colleges, librarys etc so need keeps any costs as low as possible. I have grandad rights on licence for 7.5t
Been trying to find out via google etc, but getting conflicting info (as you do)
Thanks for the replies
bit of a shame, as trying to keep costs down, as I will be sharing my collection for free, so wont be charging, i guess any event that wants to show the colllection will have to organise transport to and from event maybe. in the collection is a Japanese arcade machine and a ride-on amusement machine, but that might be pushing showman too far
Depending on the weight and cube of what you are moving, could you squeeze it into an under 3.5T van? Or use a 4x4 plus trailer?
That would save save a lot of grief.
Thanks m8, It may be do able at the moment in a 3.5t but collection will be getting bigger and bigger, so will need capacity rather than weight
I may look into sponsorship to cover costs as that maybe another way.
thanks for your good wishes
Adding a trailer to anything would drop you into tacho and more likely than not into O Lic as well. Potential of careful selection of a dual purpose vehicle (not just any old pickup) and trailer may achieve what you’re after, that’s may rather than will.
As already said, I believe you have to be a Showmans Guild member; but you would also be restricted to using it with a travelling fair or circus. In addition there are (or at least were) strict speed limits (low) applied to this use.
actually the intended items would with the right solicitor doing the paperwork, class as showman’s, if you were a fixture with an established travelling guild group, but it sounds like you’re doing this only at the weekends or bank holidays type of exhibition.
But equally, if you’re going to do it all substantially for free, or at least expenses only, set yourself up as a charity. If a posh ■■■■■school can be a charity, then someone who collects, preserves and shows antique and vintage ephemera to children and the elderly as a travelling museum and experience, could surely claim charitable status.
Then you could use a private 7.5T with no need for O licence as long as you stick to carrying your own exhibits and directly related spares, materials etc. So flyers OK, but a pallet of pencils saying AGEB’S VINTAGE ARCADE EXPERIENCE
that you sell for a quid ninety nine each, would stray into goods realm needing an O licence.
And the tax for a 7.5T is less than a 3.5T.
But you still have the question of parking it at home, neighbours might object less to a 4x4 and trailer, than a 7.5T. Swings and roundabouts init. OK, arcade games and electric bronco.
