i am serving in germany and when ime on leave in the uk i look for agencys but never find any of them i have full adr and full licence ime 22 do u think they will take me on for temp work!!!
I’ve split this post away from where it was originally posted so that it will get more attention. K
I used to temp occasionally when on leave.
Its a case of registering with a few agy though to ensure you get some work.
I used driver hire in Bradford.
Get hold of a local yellow pages and ring a few before you go home, although most will need you to go in and do some tests, so make sure you read up on drivers hours rules.
You haven’t mentioned where in the UK you will be staying when on leave. Your location will be important as regards rates of pay and availability of work.
With regards to your age. Yes, it could cause problems, but not insurmountable.
I feel that you will probably find Civvy driving very different to Forces Driving. The main attributes you will need are patience, initiative and inter-personal skills. Not that you don’t acquire those skills in your present employment. Just that you will need to use them in different ways.
I think there are a number of ex-military types on here who are better qualified than I to identify the differences.
Biggest difference is having to drive with a tacho in.
Patience you will have plenty of from the army, you will be used to hurry up and wait, also driving in traffic jams as your convoys cause them
Inter personal skills mmmmmmm did I have any in the forces Can’t remember
Just think of everyone as your CSM and you’ll be ok
I used to do some agency work when on leave from the navy. Sign on with two or three and give them plenty of notice of the periods you will be available for. One other important point - make sure you have permission from your unit to do outside work when you are on leave. I got caught out once and nearly ended up in some deep doo doos with my CO.
Hi, this is David’s wife - ignore anything he says about interpersonal skills, he’s just really (ZB) me off! But really - people (civvies) don’t realise how hard you have to work in the forces at times , be prepared to tell how it is, and let them know how experienced you are.
Helen. edited for languageif it needs spelling changes to get past the censor it means it’s not allowed mrs mix
What can you drive though? If you don’t have your class 1 licence of whatever its equivalent is (artics) then you might well struggle to find work. If you can drive artics and have the appropriate bit of paper to back that up then you’re at the right time of year to make a mint, especially if you plan on working in the south of the UK.
1st of all mate welcome to trucknetuk where abouts in germany are you serving and what regiment are you with i’ll take it that you have class1 licence ( ie artics) if this is the case then getting agency work should not be a problem, but it depends on what area you are from or going to be staying whilst on your leave.the money varies from region to region, hence why we need to know which area your from.
b4 you even think about getting outside work whilst on leave get your c.o. to grant permission and get it in writting that way there won’t be any come backs on you and that your covered for any event.just spin him some bull tell him your thinking about life outside the forces and are looking to gain experiance b4 leaving the force so as it looks good on the c.v. that you send to future employers
as said b4 join 3-4 agencies in your area this way it will give you a bit more of a choice to pick from, and let them know when your available to work.
driving with a tacho ain’t a problem, there pretty straight forward nothing to worry about,if and when you get taken on give us a shout on here and we’ll help you out.just get yourself clued up on the rules and regulations on the driving hours and tacho breaks, plus the weekly rest periods.it is different out here in civvy street, you can’t drive day and night like you can in the military.the last thing you need is getting pulled by pc plod.
hope it all works out for you and let us know how you get on.good luck and keep safe.
I think you migh struggle to get work at 22 but i suppose its worth a go, where are you going to be based when yo get home?.
We had an ex-army guy driving for us , he dorve 7 hours and never took a break so i would go and get a book on tacho law before you start drivin for anyone.
Anyway good luck and if you are coming to the Notts area i could give yo a few numbers to try.
I think you will have many problems age being one of them…its down to the insurance companies who in most cases ask for drivers over 25…but dont let that stop you as there are of course agencies who will take you on…of course experience in civvy street is a diferent ball game than driving for the military…but that on its own will stand you in good stead…like the previous advice…you can only try…and good luck…

for those that don’t know military driving test are exactly the same as civy one and the licence is the same as well, one difference though is that he may have passed his c+e and been driving it since the age of 18, so even though he is only 22 now thats 4 years experiance.
At that age I never had a problem getting an agency to take me on, although I did have a couple delaying payment till next time I visited them.
As Rob said at this time of year they are screaming for drivers, and not just class 1. Theres a big shortage for 7.5 tn drivers as well.
