Camber on A14 Thrapston - Brampton Hut?

Afternoon all,

Driving back from Thrapston towards Essex yesterday, most of the way along the A14 I felt as though I was leaning over to the right hand side, enough that I felt uncomfortable all the way back to Brampton. If you do this journey regular, can you re-assure me that it is the camber, and not an issue with me or the lorry? I’ve felt it before on other roads, but not to this extent!

Also, on a separate note, halfway down the M11, the dash display came up with a red warning saying Check Tacho, and the lights on the (analogue) tacho were flashing along with saying Err. I stopped once I got onto the A120 and checked it, the trace had stopped about the time the lights came on, and it also had the little mark which you normally get when you open the tray. So to all intents and purposes it looks as though I’ve removed the chart and run with it out for 25 minutes or so. I’ve marked the chart up to show that it should have read driving for this time, and made a note of the error etc. It worked fine after that when I restarted, so think I’ve done all I can to cover myself, including a defect report. Anything else I should have done?

Thanks
Gary

Reckon you’ve done as much as you can with the tacho throwing a wobbly.

Do you drive a Scania?..have you looked under the bonnet at the cab mounts…they do break every now and again, usually at the bottom of the damper unit.

Hiya,

No, not a Scania, it’s a 2003 MAN TGA. It’s normally fine, but there does seem to be the odd bit of road where it feels as though it’s leaning over, to the point where I feel that I’m forcing myself to lean to the left to compensate.

It’s just (last Wednesday) had an MOT (as a result of a VOSA stop!), so would dodgy mounts have been picked up on that? If not, I’ll tip it over next weekend and see if there’s anything obvious.

Thanks
Gary

MAN■■?..how do you have time to feel whether its leaning?

Running that 6ft radius ships wheel through your hands at lightning speed must use every muscle and sense you have, just to keep it in a straight(ish) line… :open_mouth:  :smiling_imp:

Checked tyre pressures etc too.

 @ Juddian…

Nope, never noticed.
Could of been a strong cross wind.

Hehehe - know what you mean about the wheel - I can only think of one other occasion when my arm moves that quickly

No, haven’t checked the TPs lately. I’ll do that next week as well when I get back to it.

It’s a strange thing, I sometimes get to drive new Scanias or Volvos when I do agency work for Arla, but I always like to get back to my old, high mileage, MAN. It’s done nearly 1million ks, and is 9 years old, but I love it so much better than the others. I drove a 12 plate MAN this week one day while mine was in for it’s MOT, but still didn’t enjoy it. I put it down to 2 things:

  1. The 2003 one is ‘mine’ - not 100% yet, but 95% of my time when I’m working there. Enough so I’ve got my stuff in it, including bedding.

  2. It’s got a proper gearbox, with Comfort Shift, rather than a computer deciding when, how, and if, I should pull away.

On the downside, it’s starting to show its age on the outside (but polished and cleaned to within an inch of its life on the inside!). It’s also starting to go through coolant fairly rapidly, but think that might be due to the heater matrix inside going from the hot damp smell from the heater yesterday.

Thanks
Gary
