Calstock query

Can anyone with local knowledge of the above Cornwall village help me out please? I have to go down Church Lane in Calstock on Monday in a 12ft high vehicle. The google car apparently chickened out of going under the railway bridge and I can’t find out its height. Anyone know?

There’s a 14’3 and a 14’9 in the village according to my Phillips atlas. The 14’9 is just along from the station.

A.

Lowest bridge in that area (according to the Phillips truck atlas) is 12’3" but looks to be easily avoided the only other 2 low enough to warrant a mention are both over 14’ so you’ll be fine.

Lol. Good old Phillips.

Cheers for that. On my notes the customer says it’s supposedly 11ft something. It’s the one off the main road through a sort of tunnel apparently. Will have to get a look at one of those road atlases or go there and have a look myself, which I will be doing anyway.

What’s the address? Cos not being funny I can’t find any “tunnels” in the area but there is what looks like a low bridge just off one of the roads on some private land so may not show in the atlas.

Rowse Gardens. I don’t fancy going down the bottom as I know it’s tight around there. Actually, it says 11’7’’ in notes. And when I say tunnel, I reckon it’s just a sort of enclosed bridge. I presume it’s not a busy road but hoped it might get a mention as a low bridge in a “proper” road atlas.

Can’t see any more than has already been said tbh. Looks a bit tight getting in regardless of the bridge heights mind you.

Is it this one?-

Seriously though, I don’t know of any low bridges in Calstock!
Over the river in Bere Alston there’s one but its no where near Calstock.

It’s not church lane.
If you look on the map Rowe Gardens is 2 roads down and there’s a bridge just before it so drive down to St Andrews close. Park up and walk the 100 yards down and have a butchers. The dust cart goes down there I know that as I use to do a nursery on church hill. It does get tight with the trees.

Not that one. I do believe there is a low bridge on Church Hill even though I’ve never seen it - that’s the only one I’m interested in - any chance of going round and having a look for me? I’m sorely tempted to go for it if it is 11’7’’ as my particular truck, though plated at 12ft is a few inches lower than others plated at the same height. Watch out for me in the news on Monday. Might make the Plymouth Gazette.

When you book on the Tacho make sure you mark today as “work”. . .

Now you mention it, I now know the one your on about.
I seriously wouldn’t want to drive into Calstock in anything bigger than a 7.5. Fore street looks bloody tight. You’ll be better off tackling it from the top road. ie, don’t go into Calstock via the railway station, not worth the hassle.
As Nick2008 said above, go Down Church Hill, park up in St Andrews close and walk 50 yards further down for a look-see.
If I remember correctly , that bridge is not an arch so you maybe OK. Even church hill is tight but atleast its fairly straight.

I go under this one fairly regular in a 26t that has an indicated 13 feet in the cab. This bridge is signed at 11’6. Its not a box though mind.

Yes Gembo, I imagine my one is similar to yours, which I don’t like the look of (talking bridges here). I don’t suppose you would go that way unless you had to; same here. I presume your depot is in the old station goods yard or summat. Anyway I will do as suggested; I got it all on an Iveco Daily (much easier to use than an HGV obviously) which is definitely lower than the Volvo 16 tonner it might have gone on (both say 12ft) and which I wouldn’t even think of taking down some of those roads if I can possibly avoid them. I’ve had an idea. I shall get out the height measuring stick and treble check things. Ta for help to all.

Snudger…

Will you report back on how this goes please?

Dying to see yer motor wedged under an 11 footer

I was joking about being in the news of course and have no intention of risking a bridge strike, but I will do almost anything to reduce the distance I have to troll around 150kg. Am leaving for points West now. But, god willing, I shall be back tomorrow.

Aye, that little arch bridge leads to an old railway yard. I sometimes go in there to drop off gear or pick up. Its a ball ache of a place to get into.
Let us know how it pans out tomoz.

Just heard from Jethro.

Train can’t stop Calstock Monday,
Bridge is missing :grimacing:

And my driver’s diary for yesterday has the entry “Today nothing happened”, which is generally good in the fascinating field of logistics, I find.

Turns out I was given duff info left, right, up, down etc. Don’t know why the google car apparently wimped out, which I thought suspiciously indicative of a difficult passage; the bridge is 14’9", a modern concrete structure, not some Victorian horse and cart job, and nothing like a tunnel. I would still have been tempted to try it at 11’7" as vehicle was actually plated at 11’11", so I quite rightly assumed that that would be a couple of inches over-estimated and the bridge a couple under-estimated, result:- it would fit. Thankfully it never came to embarrassingly trying to prove my theory. Forgot to take my measuring stick too. Oh well, all’s well that ends well.
