Off up to Torridon, Gairloch, Pitlochry, and Braemar next week to SYHA hostels deliveries. No food at hostels I’ve asked!
Any good cafes on route?
Thanks in advance.

So what do the feed themselves on, or are the survival courses. I’m sure if you roll up at feeding times there’s food to be blagged.
Decent one in Dalwhinne just of the A9 as you go in north bound, just on the right but for full breakfast/dinner an tea all on one plate for £9.50 I think £6 of mine went into the bin !! And laybye right across the road from it too … The road back to the A9 northwards is hell so best to go back the way you came in !!
The Youth Hostellers cook for them selves , there is a kitchen provided, I went to all of those hostels on my bike 30 years ago. Places like Torridon are remote ,there are no shops or filling stations for miles, so keep yourself and your tank topped up. Enjoy.

There off are very few so called ‘truckstops’ in Scotland. It is dire.
The ones I use up north are:
Newtonmore Grill - good value but loos quite naff.
Of a similar ilk Horsehoe cafe at Inchture A92 [Note if coming south take the 2nd Inchture turn off otherwise you go through the village come off slip TR, TR at rdbt then at next rdbt TL - coming back retrace your steps otherwise you end up with Desparate Dan…in Dundee],
Ballinluig off A9, moderate pricing can get very busy with grockles,
Stracathro A92, plenty of space but very expensive and equally naff loos.
Further north Skiach nr Alness, nice decor loos better (except the one at the back of the filling station).
Broxden (Perth) - very good selection of groceries + Subway, but bugger all truck space - hence parked all oer place! and assistants a bit hmmm … odd.
Dalwhinnie…
Gotta be 25+ years since I last stopped there.
Great cafe and an even better single malt.
There is a cafe between Conon Bridge and Garve (where you would turn off for Gairloch ).
Good grub, but it might only be takeaway, I can’t remember.
Easy parking, trucks most welcome, toilets not great, but it is a handy place to stop when you’re up that way.
Ballinluig or Newtonmore or Aviemore if theres no campers parked up on the waste ground, 2 minutes walk to the Cairngorm hotel for a steak and chips and a pint of Belhaven best
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I gather a lot of the hotels will do food n drink only in a 4 wheeler so should be ok parking.
Never been past Inverness so it’s all new.
IMO The food at Stracathro is dire
Strathcathro was great about 30 years ago but I wouldn’t recommend it now, sadly. If in Perth at Broxden there is a new place “Broxden Farmhouse” its a short walk away next to a Porsche dealer there is also a Costa on site. The carvery is good and the desserts are huge.
If you can get parked up, which you should, I reckon the best chipshop in the UK is in Aviemore. Going north enter the first road to Aviemore and it’s one of the first shops on the left.

Got a cracking run there driving some of the best roads scenery wise the UK has to offer. Enjoy
Didn’t someone recommend the Dunnichen Stone Forfar (Toby carvery) next to Forfar junction off the A90 which is across the road from the Angus council offices ?
