A couple mates and me are racking our brains, there was a Cafe (long since closed) on the A1 in Scotland, Nr Grantshouse on the Northbound side a few 100 yards past the big layby that still has the Cedars Café in it on the Southbound,
It was a single story building that is apparently still there (long time since I have been up that way) , But for the life of us we cant remember its name anyone remember what it was called?
Rikki was it the one just past the big lay-by and I am sure there was a craft/tourist shop there as well and I have forgotten the name now ( I had it ) when I started the reply but it will come to me. If I recall correctly the police used change over there for wide loads as there was a bit of old road to park you in but this was 60s/70s
cheers Johnnie
Im sure there is a thread on here about old cafes, I recall the one in question, It was good at one time & then went right down hill this was 1997ish. Regards Larry.
Hiya all,i think it was called the Anvil, but i’m not sure its a long time ago.Vic.

Aye he did,ive been trying to look it up but could’nt find it on the old cafes but it is there i think.Vic.
I’ve had many nights out there, just north of Grantshouse on the left, think it was between the A1 and the main railway track, I can even remember a ginger haired lass that worked in there but I’m blowed if I can remember the name of it. Last time I went past there was a couple of years ago and it was still there but had been derelict for a while I would imagine.

Aye that’s the place Trev, The entrance was a bit lower than the road which sometimes caused a problem or two when coming out, The last time I passed there it was an eyesore, What a waste of a good café from way back, Regards Larry.
Yes Larry as I remember it was a short sharp ramp up on to the road and I was usually carrying bright bar from Newcastle to Dundee and pulling out without moving the load was tricky.
Picked it up on google maps, but too far gone to have the name showing.Vic

Nice one
It was the Border Reiver when it was the craft shop, I think it was called the Moss before it finally closed.
Steve.
After the cafe had gone, the fuel station / post office was still open. The pub in the village was run by an old school friend, she married a local shepherd and then moved to New Zealand

Aye you could be right on The Moss, Plus it wasn’t Larry,s Retreat as someone stated, How silly of anyone to think such a thing, They didn’t stock Glenmorangie did they, Otherwise they would have still been in business, As I would have been their best customer Eh, The good old Days, Regards Larry.
I still cant remember it, tho one of the lads swears it was called the Albion, but that doesn’t ring a bell with me, Maybe it was just always “that café just past Grantshouse”
Rikki, I’m sure a previous post was correct in saying the Moss Café, here is a pic below from Wolfie’s Great North Road book, I’m sure he won’t mind me using it to help solve this question. Is this the café you meant, its looking a bit worse for wear now being in a pretty derelict condition. This is the café I mentioned in the GNR thread where I’d met the actor John Rhys Davies of Indiana Jones and more recently Lord of the Rings (as Gnome Gimli) fame. I had previously and mistakenly thought it was another café but the pic below confirms it was the same place. He pulled in driving an old big car, possibly Rover and asked about the Café being a good stop for a cuppa, which I put him right on. His car was laden on the roof with cases and bags and with a Female (I took it for his Mrs) and about Five or Six kids! I presumed he was on holiday to Scotland. I looked him up on the Movie Data site and he is a collector of vintage cars. Strange how you remember one incident but I can’t recall the correct name of the Café despite using it regularly going North! However ‘Moss’ seems to ring true, surely someone can confirm it. Franky.
The name ‘Moss side’ Café has suddenly come into mind, don’t know why but I might be getting confused again, nurse pass the medicine! By the way it doesn’t say what the café name was in Wolfie’s book either, he quotes our Bumper as just calling it the Grantshouse Cafe, so even more intriguing. Cheers Franky.
