Cab power points when parking

Caravans pay a small fee to get hooked up to a mains supply to run their electrics, heat their shower water and anything else.
Why not at truck stops and MSA `s, you could run your computer, charge up the mobile phone, watch the cab TV, and fit an electric blanket for the bunk bed, this would stop flat batteries, the call out charge to get bump started, and the power surge that damages the truck electrics.
The power point would be buried in the ground as we would hit the post if it was standing up right in the parking area, how much would you pay per night.?
I hear the Canadians and Americans already have power points in their truck stops.

Great idea but remember the yanks have abit bigger trucks than us :stuck_out_tongue: but still a good idea?

Simple answer is…They would get stolen/ broken and fought over.

Good idea Toby, but in a country that doesn’t even have plug-in points to run the reefers at night (enviromental & noise) I think there is more chance to see Robin Hood riding the Monster of Loch Ness through the streets of Nottingham.
(or find some beef in Findus Lasagna)
But it would be a solution for many drivers.
And with prices we pay in MSA’s I think this should come inclusive including a personal Butler to connect the lead, or am I pushing it a bit here? :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Just park next to a truck that has an anderson connector and use his batteries instead :grimacing:

an then you got numpty that forgets to unplug and is towing Michael Wood a few miles down the M5 before realising it :unamused:

THIS ^^^

btw who is Michael Wood? any relation to Richard Charnock?

Got to say Toby - one of your better ideas but as others have said - if they can’t supply a hook up for a reefer trailer I honestly can’t see it happening for drivers to run their microwaves which would cut the trade in the shop/ cafe . Then you have to count in the damage caused by drivers backing over the top of the hookup points and driving off in the morning with it still hooked up . You can see it gets messier than a Stobart load of cream cakes .

Good idea.

But this is Britain… Do the maths

these things to be placed at truckstops for people to reverse in to. Have you seen the state of the fence in the Toddington services

are they still doing them :grimacing:

In a country that is pushing truck drivers to park on industrial estates and lay by’s like never before this will never happen and if it did the cost for the driver/company would be at an extortionate rate on top of the already sky high parking fee.
We have them here but they dont keep the batteries charged, its mainly a thing that connects to your side window and pumps in air at the desired temp to avoid the need to idle the engine and also provides internet and tv etc but the trucks who pay to use it are an exteme minority. The only plugs that we have on our trucks here are for the block heater. We still get flat batteries like any one else if we park for too long without running the motor.

Good idea, but MSA’S are crap, if the weather gets cold over night you can’t even get water, cos the tap is frozen!

Here’s a brilliant idea from our Scottish Goverment they are going to put charging points every 50 miles on the Motorway for electric cars now I dont know how many of these cars there are in Scotland but they are no exactly common add to that the fact it takes about 6 hrs for a decent charge can you see these being used at all. Two and a half million reported cost for this and this is the goverment that wants independence I know where my vote will go.

So any o you lads that have a hook up cable you will be able to park up at one of these charging points lets face it they are never gonnie be busy. Eddie.

Not sure where you getting your facts from, most comercial cars can be charged up to 80% in less then 15 mins, about the time it takes to have a coffee, and once the inferstructure is there elec cars will probably outsel petrol/diesel in a few years, almost every major manufacturer has a working design and prototype of elec vechile ready to go into production if there not already avalible.

Fantastic idea but think about it.
The independant cafes/truckstops have not got the finances availble to provide this sort of facilty or the parking fee will rise . Transport managers do not want to pay out for parking in the first place and especially if a driver “needed to power me laptop and play on me PS3.”
Services do not want us parking there hence silly prices for a dirty, germ ridden shower and the possibilty of a meal voucher for a cold, dried out, been under the light portion of fish and chips.
The result will be more and more wagons in lay-bys and industrial estates which is win win for the transport manager and the customer which in the end will be higher prices in the shops!

AHT. The chairman of the Electricity Council dealing with electric cars when questioned on STV about the price of your average electric car quoted 50grand in which case it will be along time before they become very popular. Eddie.

If they are underground, then some brain dead [zb] will park on top of it.
And with health and safety (the screwdrivers favorite friend), They will have to call someone out to plug it in.
It’s a good idea, But i use oranges, connect them in series and charge your batteries.

I’ve put in a link to show you how easy it is.
