Cab Hopping

As per title would an extra £100 a week appease you?

After circa five years I’ve had enough of hauling bits of dead animal about and I’m looking for pastures new. Went to see the well known green and white walking floor haulier this week and all went well until this issue reared it’s head.
Tramping all week I expect an assigned vehicle but to start at this depot I’d be a hopper changing vehicle weekly and potentially more than once each week depending on “needs of the business”. I was told I could expect to do this for minimum a few months and there is already four guys in front of me waiting for an assigned vehicle.
Told the nice gentleman unfortunately I wasn’t willing to work under these conditions to which he replied “Aye you’d get an extra hunner quid a week but”. Still not for me so we shook hands and parted ways.

I’m not willing to drive the seventy or so miles to the yard every Monday morning stressing about what mess does or doesn’t await me and how long I’m going to have to spend in said mess. Everyone has their own version of clean. £100 doesn’t alleviate this for me.

I’m also sceptical about the extra £100 due to the unique pay structure at this firm. Being as it’s pretty much impossible to work out your wages due to bonuses and percentage payments you’d never really know if you were actually getting that extra £100.

And before anyone starts with the snowflake patter, how many times have you climbed in a bulker full of dead cattle this week?

If your on about Jenkinsons the extra £100 pw is right. My mates just started ( 6 weeks ago ) running out of Chippenham, he’s on a 12 week probation then gets set on full time, during the probation he’s cab hopping and gets the extra £100. After 12 weeks he gets a truck, he’s had no issues so far with cleanliness of the trucks, he’s said for the work involved they are spot on.

Correct me if I’m wrong Grumpy but I believe that unlike Stobarts the majority of drivers at Jenkies are employed and not EE agency?

Not anymore. My mate is the drivers rep at Chippenham. They can’t get or keep drivers at the moment. Very poorly run company in my opinion. Couldn’t get me on there for love nor money

I couldn’t tell you about what and who they employ, my mates currently through an agency but after 12 weeks he’s completed probation and employed full time.
And he’s English not EE

Wouldn’t be too fussed doing it once a week but no chance through the week. The extra moolah would be a sweetener but I get your concerns about not knowing exactly how much is really extra.

Wouldn’t be for me either, doesn’t sound like there’s a V8 either, so an instant no from me.

I drive two trucks a week every week. Same trucks I cover two drivers rest days and get no extra for it. Doesn’t faze me to be honest, I’ve cut right back what I carry and can go from one to the other and heading back out gate in 10 minutes. Had allocated trucks for past 10/15 years and to be honest I don’t really miss it, you just end up filling it up with crap to point where it takes hours to empty!

You do get the extra £100 per week. You dont have to change motors midweek either (normally)as you leave the yard monday and come back friday.you will notice the extra £100 in your wages…

But when you have been a good boy long enough you get an allocated truck BUT you now earn £100 less■■?

£100 pw? £400 per month. I’d cab hop for that mid week or not and when they offered me my own I’d say no thanks let someone else have it and I’ll stay getting the extra £400 per month. Minus 4 weeks holiday and that’s an extra £4800 per year for moving your bags from one unit to another and maybe have to give it a quick wipe around and sweep out.

You dont have to get allocated a truck. They are quite happy to keep some guys on permenant cab hopping duties. We have about half a dozen permenant cab hoppers in Penrith.Everyones happy .so all is good.Stops the agency boys biffing tank straps and steps in the forests when youre on holiday.

^^^^^^this no brainier. Don’t forget your night out money too, so basically wages+cab bonus+nights out. Seems good to me. That bonus is another£5k a year. What’s not to like.

Not for me, I’ve still got that owner driver mentality, I like ‘‘my own’’ motor, kept tidy inside, set out how I want it, with all my gear (and all my crap   ) in it.
It would be like moving into a new flat every week…and not always a clean and hygenic one either. :bulb: :smiling_imp:
So keep your 100 notes for me.

Indeed it does look and sound very good but possibly too good to be true perhaps? I genuinely don’t think at the end of the year there would be a near £5k difference between a driver with an assigned vehicle and one who hops cabs. Just the same as I doubt there would be a significant difference between a driver who runs flat out all week chasing the percentage and one who works at a more leisurely pace.

But…

If you checked into a hotel to find your sheets and towels hadn’t been changed, the shower hadn’t been scrubbed and there were unspeakable things still in the dunny, you’d blow a fuse.

Ewww.

I get offered a pick of cabs each day to drive, and any one does me. The main reasons I’d not pick a particular cab - would be reasons like “Radio doesn’t work” or “stinks of ashtray”, bearing in mind you can’t really defect a vehicle for such “faults”.

Cab hopping as a day man is a whole different ball game to cab hopping as a tramper though, aint it.

No need. Their opinions and the opinions of rigid drivers are not really important :grimacing: :grimacing:
