Will someone who’s management - please explain to us all WHY the cameras are “driver facing” rather than ‘around the outside of the vehicle in all directions outward-looking’ please.
“Catching people on their mobiles” isn’t enough on it’s own to warrant this gross invasion of privacy.
I suppose it makes some sense if you’re handling cash - but that doesn’t apply to general haulage surely?
Picture the scene:
Driver going along… Look of concentration on his face… No straying hands, full possession of his faculties… then look of surprise, then disgust on his face…
Meanwhile, the other driver who’s just backed out of a driveway and into the front of the truck at speed was NOT recorded reversing into our driver… Swears to plod that the trucker just rear-ended him. Camera can’t prove he’s lying, 'cos it’s looking in the wrong bloody direction!

The system my mate has is a 5 way system. One at the front, one rear ,one left and one right plus the driver facing one. That’s also the same system that been mentioned to me
I’ve just started a new job in which I’m also cab hopping, and where a few motors have inward facing cameras (we probably work for the same firm ). I’ve had the pleasure of driving two such vehicles, and the psychological feeling it evoked was awful. However, I noticed the first camera had been cleverly turned around so as to record the A-pillar, and the second one was obscured by the tax-disc/operator’s disc holder, which I didn’t bend into position. I expect many drivers will remove trim and snip wires, so a lot of them probably won’t work. I don’t carry a tin of Vaseline around with me, but I hear some drivers do, as well as black marker pens. This camera malarkey is definitely the final nail in the coffin for me, mainly because of the implications. You’d only have to yawn and that’d be used as evidence you were too tired to be driving. Not only that, but I quite like to sip coffee and eat the occasional sandwich - something the encroaching Orwellian dystopia strongly disapproves of.
Another poster mentioned blocking the camera, but using his own. That might be worth considering, because you could control how it’s used, which lessens any negative psychological impact. But yeah, the job’s definitely going down the pan now.

You’ve been there 1000000 years Conor. Have you been offered 43k full time yet??
Not sure my back is up to going permanent. Been doing full time for the last few weeks and suffering because of it. Really narks me off.
I see, £10 an hour and agency suits you better? Come on, that 43k is not on offer for new starts. If it was you wouldn’t be getting full time hours, and the queues would be out the corner and round the block. I smell bovine excrement.

I think the crux of the matter is that he hasn’t been offered a full time gig!
surely being offered a fulltime gig when your already riding the crest of a zero hours night trunk 42kpa wave would be tantamount to a slap in the goolies with a wet haddock?.or am i missing something here? of course if it was a fleet spec cab that smelt like a camel drivers underpants then that may be a different story…

I’m not saying I agree with them at all but we can all blame the likes of fors and the insurance industry for them.
Unfortunately as much as we’d like to lay the blame at the doors of FORS and the insurance companies we have to look at our own in the industry.
It would appear that drivers still can’t get it into their skulls that they can’t drive along playing on their phones.
To often we see another truck has ran into a queue of traffic and the driver sent or read a text 30 seconds before he shoves a family under the artic in front.
People are struggling with the basics I had a driver arrive at an RDC last week who promptly declared he had no safety boots and had to drive round the local town looking to buy a pair.
You can’t beat a forward facing camera to beat idiots like this
So the outward facing dash cam is ok, but the driver facing one isn’t, even though both could prove the driver innocent in an incident.
It’s easy to see what type of driver would be the main ones to complain about truck mounted cameras by the way they drive their truck on the road.
It’s just something else forced on the many because of the actions of a few.
If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to worry about.
Oh and cab hopping as a tramper is a bit crap, but if others are going to be using it whilst your off, your best to empty all your gear out at the end of the week anyway as its likely to go missing, I wouldn’t worry to much about it if the money and vehicles are ok.
I have an allocated truck I use when on shift which will be used used by others when i’m off shift.

Maybe your gaffer could fit some in your bedroom to ensure you’re getting enough rest as well mate…
How exactly can a camera facing you show you’re innocent in an accident?

How about the camera filming a driver collapsing at the wheel seconds before ploughing into the back of a line of stationary traffic on the motorway as 1 example.
The camera fitted to the truck I drive is only active when the ignition is on.
I was talking to one driver who had them in his cab, he said it only points at the drivers seat, is only active when the engine is running and its obscured when the curtains are drawn.

And they can’t establish that in other ways? Just as they did with the bin lorry crash…
If I’ve collapsed at the wheel and ploughed into some poor soul/s, while it’s tragic, I doubt I’ll be that worried as to whether I can prove I wasn’t at fault, as I think I’ll have bigger things to worry about…

Not the best example in my eyes mate, any more?
I think the answer is obvious. Too many accidents have been caused by drivers not paying attention, the camera would show that at the time of an accident the driver of said vehicle was playing around on his phone and failed to see the stationary traffic ahead.

I’m not questioning that mate, I’m asking how a driver facing camera proves their innocence…

Its more likely there to prove their guilt. If there is video evidence of the driver messing with his phone on the lead up to hitting a stationary vehicle which if the driver was paying attention he would of seen long before then its a clear cut case.

Really! So the medical profession can tell why and how every collapse occurred?
I think it was a rather plausible example, say that did happen without a camera and the driver couldn’t remember what went on, and those that do couldn’t find anything physically wrong with the vehicle or driver, do you not think he would be looking at getting charged with causing death by dangerous driving? I doubt that not being able to remember would be a very good defence.

Any “Case Studies” available?
I’ve already heard of drivers being sacked for being on the phone, but not as yet “members of the public being done for perjury” when camera evidence is presented in court proving that the “try it on” fool has been lying to the police, and kept on lying right into the court case… Too many of the public these days have this “All-In” mentality you see… Everyone’s a poker player it seems… "They’'ll argue “You’re not 100% sure of yourself, so we’ll take it to court. Your firm will pay me off before it gets there”… Such is the compensation culture we live in today.
I’ve even had an insurance company refuse to pay me out (cos I had no evidence it was their driver that actually hit me) and demanded that I secure a police conviction vs their driver before they’d even pay me for an apparent open and shut case of rear-ending me… So guess what? - I pressed charges, and the driver got busted (600 driver) which would not have been necessary had he just put his bloody hand up straight away, and left the insurance company to pay it out. So much for “Insurers advise clients never to admit liability in a collision”. Duff advice if it ends up with the driver actually getting busted though eh?
On another occasion, I got rear-ended by a woman, and she put her hand up straight away saying “My contact lenses fell out”… No quibble payout from her insurer. Inexpensive too, as I only drive old bangers, so the damage was minimum cost. It’s in everyone’s interest “not to f— about” then when dealing with public honesty issues I suggest.
In the online community, we have this daft situation where there are oodles of “Russian” or “Brazilian” or Taiwan" dashcam clips out there with clear evidence of wrong-doing… What do we get in the UK on pootube then? - Bloody “OOh he left the roundabout without signalling” and other stuff so tame you’d fall asleep watching it.

Ahh the old chestnut that always comes up in this type of thread, and there it is.
Well if you want to swallow that management type ■■■■■■■■ (that will just about apply to any old thing they chuck at us ) I don’t.
I definitely have nothing to worry about in terms of texting, falling asleep, reading, when driving or any other recipe for disaster you can come up with to spin this gross encroachment of freedom and privacy that ‘‘they’’ are imposing on us…cos I don’t do any of them.
That does not mean to say I am willing to be watched constantly by some arse hole in an office (who has evidently nothing better to do), because some crap drivers do all and more of these bad practices.
Btw mate, How far do you go with your ‘‘If you have nothing to worry about’’ mantra exactly? It could ( and does ) be used to justify any unfair treatment, or in this case any Orwellian management style method you could imagine, from regular rubber glove style body searches to tracking implants.
So I can just see you in the transport managers office bent over the desk with a jar of ky jelly in one hand and your clinic appointment card for your implant in the other nodding your head with the tm saying ‘‘Relax Weeto mate, if you have nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to worry about’’
As for me I reckon I would maybe show a bit of resistance…token at the very least.

No way would I have a camera spying on me. I’d rather give up the job and become a fork truck driver on a set shift pattern.
So if a job at Howdens came up on £43k plus bonuses plus company pension plus company healthcare insurance came up you and the other halfwits would say you’re not interested because the trucks have cameras fitted?
Riiight.
How come they haven’t offered you a job &
Howdens isn’t everyone’s dream job. Believe it or not but different people enjoy different things.
