Cab Height

i would be interested if there is any legal definition, all I have found is that it has to be a ‘full length’ bunk. There must be more to it than that surely, as dennisw1 says a plank of wood is out.
Thanks for putting me right Lucy, Im a bit shocked though.

I mean at the end of the day you could have a bed roll and a survival bag and kip on the verge. That would be legally ok as far as daily rest went.

At the mo I’ve got a DAF 65cf  with the space cab and I can stand upright if I stand on the engine cover and I’m 6’0. There was a rumour that this was gonna be replaced with an R-series Scania. time for me to dig out the old wooden spoon me thinks :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I likes me space

failing those Travel Inns now only £26 but you may have to argue the toss with TM to get your money back…going to court is a right bother but you would win cos its a responsible request have some where decent to sleep and eat when out on company businesss

I think you will find that travel inns charge a good £40 for a room

I was under the understanding that the money we get called night out money or expenses is to cover accomadation ?

If this is the case then £26 (which i get per night out) will not go very far.

Of course if you’re only worried about being able to stand up you could just get a roof hatch

I remember the Ministry raiding the layby opposite me once for drivers sleeping in the cab, I was off like a shot, but I was 23 then, now it takes me at least 45 minutes to prize myself out of the bunk, takes 2 mugs of tea too, my knees have gone now and in the mornings I have to check if anything else has packed up (personal daily checks :open_mouth: )
My old man used to haul timber in the '50’s, they used to sleep under the wagon then (Unipower, anyone remember them). BUT it was a very different job then (and in the 60’s and 70’s). No being chased, and your own boss on the road, swings and roundabouts I reckon.
I think Im repeating myself again, that happens when you get old doesnt it, and doesnt that happen when you get old :unamused:
Seriously though I think all my comments are influenced by the crap job I have right now

  you are not alone!

i had a big wire coming up to right where i was in the top bunk of the seddack, just twist 2 wires together when i woke up the night heater would turn on, resert the alarm for 30 mins and rollover till it went off, lovely!

From memory (which aint too good) there is a minimum distance required by law from steering wheel to rear of the cab.

Oh Phill, how kind to bring back all those memories of long-forgotten drivers’ myths  , how we used to argue for hours whether it was from the front or back of the wheel, or if merely from anywhere on the wheel to your head (the origin of the other great myth as to which end you sleep, I suppose)

Been there, done that, 'specially in OZ under the trailer, sleeping bag pulled very tight at the neck when the old boys told us how snakes and scorpions love to be warm and cosy :open_mouth:
Which brings us to the other great myth - how far from the cab/truck must you be to sleep outside?

Scot51:
Because these new standard R Cab Scania’s only allow you to stand up if you are under 5ft 11" and as Im over 6ft I was wondering if there is any documentation around ie for health and safety reasons.

Bless :unamused: . That’s your fault for having Dutch blood in your veins   , in the old days all long distance drivers were under 5’6", it was the law, that’s why the ministry men were all issued with tape measures and spine curvature guages. They knew instantly who had been trying to see out of a Micky Mouse Foden by crouching down, how we used to laugh at those humpty backed drivers, mind you trying to get undressed standing on a pile of sheets, ropes, and chains can’t have helped - even I used to get a bit compressed in those days

Salut, David.
