C&U or STGO

A local firm has asked me to price them for some occasional work that would mean pulling an extendable step frame semi lowloader to carry loads that are overlength and overwidth, but would fall well within the 44 tonne gross limit.
They would own the trailer (yet to be constructed) which would measure 50’ closed and would extend to 75’+
They would sort out the Abnormal Load notification/escorts etc
Could this type of work be done under C&U, or is there no option but to go STGO?
Could I legally backload non oversized loads with this trailer?
Whats the VED for STGO cat 1?

Could this type of work be done under C&U,

Yes… there is provision under C&U for longer trailers built to carry loads of exceptionel length (many Steel hauliers run 50, 55 and 60 foot long flats)

Could I legally backload non oversized loads with this trailer?

as long as the trailer is plated under C&U regs you can backload divisible loads on it

DFT website:
2) Construction and Use Regulations:
Construction and Use Regulations 1986 apply to loads, which are wide or long but not heavy. Vehicle lengths may reach 27.4 metres and can be carried on specially designed vehicles. Loads up to 30.0 metres long can be moved under STGO. Loads carried on any other type of vehicle or loads in excess of 30.0 metres length can be moved under STGO. Loads carried on any other type of vehicle or loads in excess of 30.0 metres require a Special Order.

Widths above 2.9 metres but less than 4.3 metres are permitted by the Construction and Use Regulations. Widths above 4.3 metres up to 5.0 metres are classified are permitted by Special Types General Order (STGO) on AILV. Movement of loads between 5.0 and 6.1 metres require Highways Agency Special Order procedure (form BE16 action.)
