hi
my son is only 17 he passed his car driving test back last month. he works for a large truck dealers as a trainee fitter/mechanic
they told him that they are going to put him through his class c (rigid) test
i told him they cant because you have to be 21.
today he has had to take his driving license to work so they can complete the nessasary paper work.
it is a big company so they must know what there doing as they must do this with other trainees through out previous years.
but whats the point in putting him through his class c if he cant drive them on the road or can he?
anyone know anything
they will be doing it under the Young Drivers Scheme, i believe that you can get your licence from 18 years old, or they are altering the rules so that it will be 18.
do a search on Young Drivers Scheme on the internet and it should tell you more about it
He will be able to drive them on the road. The company will be ‘sponsoring’ him via the Young Drivers Scheme. Most people don’t know about the scheme because its quite unheard of but it’s been going on for some time now.

The YDS has just about died a death now due to the INITIAL DRIVER CPC being introduced on Sept 10 this year where 18 year olds will be able to get their C and then C+E licences.
The insurance companies will probably load the excess premiums so high that there will be very few haulier companies that will take them on.

Ah the lesser spotted Parrotus Rogus is in the room…
i got my class c at 19 and my class c+e at the age of twenty and not through the YDS cause in ireland the age is 18 except for a bus which is 21 . Im 23yrs old now and the insurance is still a problem but if the firm see’s your willing will take that risk and pay for you to be put onto the policy…

sorry for the delay rog. he will be 18 begining of november
john
In that case he cannot drive on the public highway until November - his 18th birthday - it may be that the company is going to start him early off-road or apply for a provisional in order for him to get the theory modules 1a + 1b done early - I’m sure this is possible as I have known car L learners to pass the practical on their 17th birthday having done the theory beforehand - how they got the pre test road experience is a mystery to me though
