With a second bite at the cherry, after a disastrous first attempt, i passed today in an artic,
with Tockwith Training near York.
I had wanted to pass before my 50th birthday, but it wasnt to be, but managed it before im 51.
Any of you older lads and lasses who are thinking you are too old…you,re not, get among it !!!

Regards
Pat

Well done mate,

I have just turned 42 and decided for a change in my career. I am getting trained at Tockwith Training as well
I will go for the theory test asap, and I am quite excited to go back on the 18 tonnes after the driving assessment: I really love driving and I have enjoyed my 45 minutes journey around Tockwith, Rufforth, Acomb

Was your C+E training on an automatic gear as well? I like it, but have concerns if a future employer have a fleet of old trucks… not scared, but I would like to get trained on a manual gear.

Hi Mac, think all the wagons at Tockwith are auto’s, the Volvo fh and fm artics are i shift, and an easier vehicle to drive you would struggle to find, we have manual volvos where I work, and a a few man auto’s and it’s really not a problem shifting between the two makes. You will probably get Greg or Rob for your C+E, both really sound fellas who know the job inside out. Best of luck with it, and enjoy it.

Regards

Pat

Hi Pat,

forgot to say: I am going for the class C, not C+E yet (maybe after I feel confident enough to move up).
that is why my question: indeed I have no idea how difficult could be having a manual gear on 18tonnes: I have only driven the Parcel Force vans.

all the best to you as well

cheers,

Mac

A 2001 DAF CF manual artic mate. One of the synchro’s had a horrible crunch on one of the gears lol. The thing had a million k’s on it but it drove ok. I figured that if I could pass a test in that, then everything else would be gravy.

hehe

well, seeing it inside, looks like quite challenging

Sorry beaver I missed this reply. I guess your testicles must be the largest of the large!

Ditto.

And my advice would be get out there and start driving them as soon as you can, the longer you’re away from them, the more doubts will enter your cranium about what a handful they are.

Took me just over 2 years to take the plunge, one of my biggest regrets ever.
