C&E Driving test

Hi all, hope everyone is well…not been on here for ages, since I passed my C test in June 11… Anyway, what I’d like to know is, how many of you passed your Class 1 driving test first time? I took mine earlier today and failed it. It was in Stockport and some of the routes they take you round are really tight, and getting an artic round them without issue is difficult. My driving instructor told me that I’d likely be going left at the junction of Lingard Lane and Ashton Rd A6107, and that if any car was in the right turn filter lane on the road I was turning into, not to go in case I take a car out with the headboard…so anyway, I followed this advice, thinking I was doing good but no, I got a serious mark for that. Also, Enterprise LGV sent me for test in a DAF CF that I hadn’t yet driven, gearbox really stiff, so I got 7 when I was aiming for 5 a few times… I’m gutted to be honest, I feel like I’ve done really well in my 20 hour course this week, only to mess up today. Is there anything at all any of you know that may help me pass next time? It’s too expensive to keep failing. I also messed up a tight left turn in Hyde, didn’t straddle enough on the way in with the result that the trailer wheels touched, not mounted, the kerb after I had tried my best for that not to happen the examiner said that I failed to notice where the headboard was going and a car was really close… I thought after the test I’d done well, but the the examiner uttered the dreaded words… Yep, I’m gutted. Can anyone advise on this? Thanks.

Does not seem like you were relaxed enough to take the test which is not surprising given what you posted

Sorry to hear this , I passed mine 9 months back first time i payed for it myself I would have been gutted if I had failed …

It’s not to fair if you took your test in a truck you hadn’t been doing your lessons in surly this is the whole point to practising …

I took mine in a lorry and drag easer than an Arctic I’d look into that if I was you , good luck…

Hello Doug sorry to hear you did not pass your C+E.Do not be too hard on yourself. You are not the first and you will not be the last.
I presume because you did not go into the lane your instructor told you to go in that you ended up on the kerb with your trailer.
That in itself is not a fail but it depends on the situation and has a lot to do with your obsevation.
Ideally you need to speak to that instructor and asked him why he told you not to go in the lane.Maybe he told you to hold back if there was a car there.
I do not know but you need to get the correct info for the next time.
Also the fact you were in a strange truck with a stiff gearbox was definitely not the best for you.Again I would question why it happened and make sure next time you have the same truck as you were trained in.
Get these things sorted for next time and I am sure you will pass.Good luck.

Thanks guys, all replies appreciated… I wasn’t relaxed, you’re right there… I do feel a bit cheated that I wasn’t in the same truck…however, Enterprise only use the CF and the difference between the 3 tractors they run is the horsepower and the year of registration, so that shouldn’t really have been a major problem. Do me a favour guys, go on google earth and check out that junction and let know what you would do to get round it without issues. I turned left out of the Stockport DSA test centre onto Lingard Lane, went to the top and turned left into Ashton Road SK5. Instructor told me to straddle which I did, but he said not to go if the right filter lane on Ashton Rd in front of me was occupied, it was so I didn’t go. The lights there are quick changing and when they went to green and I started to go, another vehicle appeared in the filter lane in front of me, so I stopped and ended up straddling the stop line, then the lights went red again. I followed instruction as much asI could, however, it cost me the test because I was concerned where the headboard was going.

Stockport? The DSA list goes from Stirling to Stoke On Trent no mention of Stockport.

Try Bredbury

Yeah it’s Bredbury…sorry about that, should’ve said… It’s a joint training centre, VOSA and DSA.
