My dad drove for Chastney’s for many years - and I traveled with him a lot as a young pup.Started in an old Bedford (I slept on the parcel shelf at the back) then an F86 (PUP 890M then APT 861s) in the old Aitkinsons that used to do the Matterson runs. Then an F10, Scannia 111 (the one in the picture) a Scania 112 etc.
I had some good times.
I remnember Kenny Pake (Pakey) and Jimmy Johnson, Malcom (the fitter) and Mickey Nairns, John Johnson, John Walton, Alan Hawkes (died a few year back and in one of your pics), Shotton.
Although I wanted to be a truckie myself, once I did get behind the wheel I found it was not for me. I prefer my current desk job telling other people what to do - and being home with my wife every night.
My dad (Chas King) still lives in Sunderland after spending a few years in Malta - but just an old ■■■■ now. Don’t see him much as I live in the land of the Macks, Kenworth’s amd Peterbuilts…sunny Florida.
Do you have any more Chastney pictures? I would love it if you could send me what you have…good times.

this is the photo from the sunderland echo, charlie king, brian shotton and john johnson on the way to rungis.
Yeah I remember that pic in the Sunderland Echo - when the French were burning our bloody lambs!
SO now you have my dad and uncle Alan in this thread! I remember that bloody leather jacket my dad had on…he had that for years and had it on all the darn time!
Having a dad as a trucker was a great thing for a kid - even a miserable old sod like mine. I got to see a lot of Europe and the UK all for free. I was obsesed with trucks when I was a kid.
Did’nt you start out driving the Chastney Scania 81 six wheeler? I kinda sorta think I can remember you, but I do remember Jimmy Johnson and Shotton. My favorite to run to Europe with was Jimmie Johnson - as soon as he got on the ferry he’d get seasick - was always good for a laugh - but a nightmare to keep up with drinking!
Good times indeed!
the six wheeler driver was neil clark. the first motor i got was a 111 scania, wbb 340t. your dad used to pretend he was some sort of east european with that old coat on. hed jump the queue on the stairs at dover customs, when people shouted at him he just shrugged his shoulders and pretend he didnt understand them!
hello twinsplitter,
the first brand new 111 my dad got at freeways was WBB 339T, i went on its maiden voyage with him to london he always kept that truck tidy,
cheers mark
This is the old F86 my pop used to drive
i love the pic of that 86. there was one left there when i started but i cant remember the reg. i did a trunk to broxburn with it for a while out of mattessons durham. id love to see any more pics if youve got them
another couple of pics ive found
Wow the Bedford TK - ■■■■ man that is an old pic - I remember my dads - I used to sleep on the parcel shelf at the back. It would do about 30mph up a hill!!!
Keep them coming, your pics are great. I have some which I will have to scan and put up - I sent my dad the link too…hopefully he will scan some.
I sent my dad the pic of the F88 you use as your signature, it used to be his, he was please to see the pic, said it brought back memories…I think that was the first good truck he had.
So you have pics of the Chastney Aitkinsons, the Scammel or the 6 wheeler leyland they used on the Mattesons Airdrie run? The Leyland was the noisiest truck in the world, but there were few that could overtake it
hello f88 us. next time you talk to your dad, tell him gary was asking after him. found a few more pics me and ernie crone outside normans cafe, brotherton
