Morning All!
thinking of installing a bypass filter for my lube oil…is it worth it? what is everyones opinion on these?
What vehicle?
And I wonder how an engine with an oil pump designed for a conventional filter system, will perform with a finer filter?
I wouldn’t be attempting to fix what ain’t broke.
I currently drive a volvo D13
I keep reading articles about how there is increased soot in lube oil now due to lower manufacturing standards and the damage the particles do to your engine. although it’s a further spend
seems a small price to pay if the unclean lube oil is damaging my engine? and actually a popular choice in the US! just wondered what other drivers experiences of these were?
and which choice they opted for? I have a few I’ve looked at.
Instead of changing oil at 100k change it at 50k.
hmm…even changing at 50K has the same problem of oil that hasnt been filtered properly and the stuff in the oil still does the damage! (or so i’ve read anyway)
also call me a hippy but I want my oil lasting as long as possible, even driving a truck I want to do my bit for the environment!
is no one else concerned about potential damage to our engines? or is it just me? would really like to hear of peoples experience with these extra filters!
Any sudden surge in engines failing due to “different tolerences”?
Articles online come in many different flavours and with different…smells…Same as online posts, I guess.
So you wouldn’t consider installing a Bypass filter then?
Very true! just something I had recently been researching and thought here would be a good place for some extra knowledge
on the flipside I’ve never read an article saying particles in oil are fine to be circulated round your engine!

I too have never seen anyone saying particles in lube are good.
Haven’t seen anything about lowering of standards at Volvo or their engines wearing out prematurely either.
As already said, if you seriously think the engineers are all wrong, simply drop the oil and replace more frequently.
I personally wouldn’t be trusting anyone who says they have a quick fix for summat that ain’t broke.
if you research lubrication oil there’s plenty of articles about how there is increased soot in it these days.
Volvo would not lower their standards they are a great engine…hence why i would want to protect it.
I believe in preventative measures instead of waiting for something to break! it’s called reliable maintenance, like i said small investment big protection.
erm…i never said the engineers are wrong? infact I think most engineers would agree with me! Like i already said I like to be as eco-friendly as possible so I want to extend oil change intervals not increase them! keeps costs lower and everyone should be aiming for this! I’m not trusting anyone on their word hence the research. thanks for your opinion though!

Hey, it’s great to hear that you think the Volvo engineers are really good!
So do I. That’s why I think that they have probably gone for the optimal solution in their lube system design. Why wouldn’t they, with such a great product and reputation to protect?
Really interested in the research you’re doing. How’s that going?
Most full flow filters will only filter out particles to the size of 30 microns. every time these particles left in your oil hit an engine component they break up into even more damaging particles! adding a bypass filtration option removes particles down to 1 micron! that must save your engine something surely? Not slating the volvo engineers at all but it isn’t something that they provide (only the full flow). The more I look into it the more it makes sense. Truckers all across America use these all the time, they are used across loads of sectors to protect engines. If you’re interested in the technology try googling truck MP090 centrifuge (this is the one I’m considering as the remote monitoring also cuts down maintenance time)
tbh I’m surprised no one is supportive of this technology! using less oil surely has to be a positive?
Does the new filter system bypass the existing filter totally? Or does it run in parallel or in series with it?
I’d be interested to find out about the pressure drop across original and modified filter systems.
An interesting image of soot particles impinging on surfaces and fragmenting.
Is there any data to support the assertion about there being more soot in oil now than previously?
Mmm. I smell sales pitch. I might be wrong
@biggriffin not a sales pitch at all just trying to get opinions and different views on something that saves time, money, oil and your engine! thought this forum would be interested in this sort of technology! it’s definitely something that interests me!
I suppose a secondary filter wouldn’t do any harm, allowing normal pressure and flow through the main filter and only filtering a part of the oil through a secondary.
But isn’t this why engines have oil spinners to remove the nasties? are they not fitted or not up to the task on Volvos?
Purely out of interest, if anyone is, an unusual oil filter is fitted to the autobox on’t mrs’ car, its a spin on filter that looks identical to a normal engine oil filter but it works opposite, an engine oil filter is designed to filter all the oil but with a by pass built in if the filter can’t cope with teh flow or gets blocked, the transmission filter is designed to let most of the oil pass by unfiltered, the transmission demands massive oil flow and if all the oil was being strained contantly there wouldn’t be enough oil in high demand situations, so it filters only a percentage of the oil but constantly…quite a clever solution for filtering trans oil in my humble, dashed clever those Japanese.
Oh yes you can be sure, some clots don’t like paying £25+ for the genuine trans filter, so fit an engine oil filter instead
It runs alongside your existing filter, taking out 10% of your lube oil so as to not affect the pressure. it then cleans and removes contaminants and then oil is then again put in circulation but minus any harmful bits! I don’t have any sepcific data regarding this but apparently its as a result from having to reduce emissions instead of being released to the air it’s absorbed by the lube oil! saving our lungs but depositing in your engine instead! )
Check it doesn’t affect warranty cheers Ray

the oil spinners don’t work as effectively as these do! and the remote monitoring is such a cool feature I think (maybe a little nerdy of me haha) I’m on a few american trucking groups and these are a super popular bit of engineering to install on your truck
for me…it’s definitely something i will be looking into and how it could help me keep my engine in the best condition

For someone “looking onto it”, and “doing research”…
You have made definitive statements about saving money, oil, maintenance and engine damage. You are on several US sites. How much research are you doing if you’ve already made your mind up?
Interesting product maybe, but adverts keep this site running.

sorry…thought forums were here for discussion? I am on US trucking groups just to look at pretty american trucks most of the time
I am simply putting my thoughts and opinions out there, and looking for feedback is all so far no feedback from anyone who has a bypass filter set up!
