Buying tipper truck for business in Africa

Hello everyone,

I am in a position of buying used tipper truck for hauling raw material in Africa.

I would be grateful if someone could give me an advice or two which tipper would be the best for this job. Right now I am thinking about Volvo F7 8 wheel (1988), DAF 6x4 tipper (1997) or Foden 8x4 (1998).
Which one would be the best for this job? I would like to buy Foden but I am scared I will have later problems finding spare parts in Africa, and that they will be extremely expensive. In Africa they have lots of DAF trucks. I presume DAF and Foden don’t use same spare parts as they have the same owner?

How much fuel do these old trucks use?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Daniel

I think you would be better posting this in the Operators forum, or possibly the main forum.

Best of luck pal!

Go with the truck manufacturer where as parts are available, no point in buying something where as you will experience breaks downs, mechanical failures and your waiting weeks for parts to be shipped from aboard…

My gut reaction…

I predict that the older Volvo will just run and run for years with few problems. Parts might be harder to source when you do need them. But simple honest reliable trucking.
OTOH you say that DAF has parts readily available and in my opinion that is great as you are more likely to need them more regularly.

We have a 20 year old Volvo tractor unit that simply refuses to die in spite of many people trying to help it on its way. It’s been around the clock at least twice, maybe three times and currently saying 550k. One of our drivers hates it with a passion but I love driving it, good old honest 4 over 4, if a bit noisy. In the last three years it’s had a new indicator stalk (don’t ask!) and finally a new exhaust when there was nothing left to weld any more patches to. Proper old work horse!
