Buying a truck for 'shows'

Unless you’re a gaffer with a workshop with down time to fill, truck restoration is a retired man’s game.

Same as car or any other restorations the numbers that get seen through to completion are low.

Beware, having found yourself a nice tractor unit to restore, it won’t be long before you wish you had a trailer to go with it. The terrible ride of a solo unit will convince you that you just have to have one. That will be when things start to get difficult, suddenly previously suitable storage facilities become hopelessly inadequate. So look for a rigid instead - you can mount your living accommodation on the back as well.

Or make a ballast box.

Nice idea but remember that if over 7.5 tonnes GVW it will be under EU driver regs

It won’t be under EU regulations if it’s only used for shows.

Where is the exemption for that please ?

It doesn’t need an exemption, the vehicle will not be used for the carriage of goods so it doesn’t come in-scope of EU regulations.

Thanks - article 1 … should have thought of that !!

That’s some of the reason as well as its cheaper to go show a truck than buy tickets etc!

Don’t forget to factor in the difference in fuel cost of driving to the show & back in, say, a diesel car doing 50mpg and an old tractor unit at say 9 mpg!

Lets say the show is 100 miles away, 200 round trip. Car fuel cost around £25. Unit fuel cost around £135

  • what are the vehicle entry fees?

Yes But if you can afford to build a show lorry I’m sure you could afford that
