Buying a Tractor Unit at Auction

Harry Monk:
Thanks for the advice Ross, ideally I’d like to be going to an auction at a fleet that has gone bust, I know that sounds a bit mercenary but it isn’t. I do feel sorry for the drivers who have lost their jobs, have been there many times and got all of the T shirts!

But someone has to buy those trucks.

I wasn’t aware that there was a private buyer’s premium, so thanks again for the info. What kind of amount are we talking about for that?

Malcolm Harrison do a lot of auctions such as the one you mention

malcolmharrison.co.uk

they are from Shropsire, but they hold the auctions at customers premises all over the country

I see some ex or current RM Page lorrys and low loaders in the next sale.

Harry Monk:
Thanks again Ross.

For you personally, where would you source a tractor unit from if you were looking for one?
Euro 4 6x2, 07 reg, that sort of thing?

PM sent.

Doing an Int CPC course myself on 22/23/24th Feb and taking the exam on 2nd March.

Good luck with the course and tests then. Can’t really offer much advice as yours will be the first course under the new format, although I am provisionally expecting to have to re-sit the International module myself- this being the only module from the December 2011 exams which can be re-taken if failed (for a further 12 months period of grace).

My course and exam is under the old format, just a special one for me and anybody who wants to take Int only for March 2nd. :sunglasses:

Ah,
you’ve prob done ALOT better than you think on the Int module, you’ll be OK.

Harry … I may have missed this in your various posts on here regarding your forthcoming venture but have you investigated the possibility of renting a truck say on a 12 month deal from one of the bigger hire companies such as Gullivers or Hill Hire.
I know the arguments about renting and money down the drain etc but there are also pro`s to the idea such as

a) Your commitment would only be the current rentals while you suss out the market you want to go into,

b) The truck would be relatively new and hopefully reliable,

C) Maintenance would be carried out as part of the deal as would breakdowns etc.

Renting would allow you to leave your money in the bank and let you get on your feet and if your venture was not working out you could finish it a lot easier than trying to sell a second hand truck. You would on the other hand get a feel for running the business and handling similar costs to buying and running a new vehicle of your own.

How much did the 510 xf ftp make? Looked at it at jds in manchester and was going to have it, but my back went and now off work for at least 6 months

Just a quick update.

I’m expecting my CPC results to be waiting for me when I get home at the end of the week, but I do not intend to apply for an Operator’s Licence in the foreseeable future as I do not believe the stars are favourable right now.

I almost certainly will do in times to come, for now I prefer to take the low risk approach of working as an employee, even on a poor wage.

Yes, I have considered every option. I just think the difference between owning a vehicle and leasing one is that I would devote far more of my time to cherishing and maintaining an owned vehicle, just as one is more willing to improve an owned home than a rented one.

That and the fact that all of the costs associated with buying and depreciation of a truck of equivalent age are also factored into a rented one too with some on top for the lease or hire company’s profit with the difference that you can give the thing back,if it’s not making enough money, without any debts left behind,if it’s on short term rental. But maybe the idea of renta third world banger for a third world economy might work. :open_mouth:

this truck is the same age, although different letter, and spec as one that my father used to drive on heavy haulage, and as yet, we have had no luck in finding it

it would be nice to get one the same and restore it to what my fathers truck was like

Yes they were Pages trucks, they both made just over 15k including buyers 5% which i thought was plenty nuff, whether the 60 ton plate makes them worth more i dont know. Both the low loaders were there as well, the tri axle andover 2006 wasnt far out at 11.5k and the 4 axle andover extender made 25k, looked a well made trailer if you had a job for it but i wouldnt want to encounter many corners.
