question is … can i still use the free lifetime maps update on it ?
I am pretty sure you would have to his password and email to log into My Drive at tomtom, that said he could change them for you and thn just log in on your pc

You couldn’t invest in anything better THAN THE 5150.
If he has registered the TomTom against his email address, he will need to de-register it (TomTom only allow one device per account - and accounts are identified by email address). I think there is a semi-automatic process to do this if he is replacing it with another TomTom - otherwise he will have to ask TonTom support to do it.
Once de-registered, you will be able to register it to your own email address and take advantage of the lifetime maps
