do the big firms get those kind of deals, buy 5 trailers get the 6 th free, lad was telling me thats why some big firms have certain marques[ not the cheapest like youd expect them too].
id expect them to get a big discount because of the amount they buy, but a truck free for buying 2 , it sounds a bit extreme to me, also a bit unfair to the small firms , doubt they could get anything like that if they tried to strike a deal.
buy one down hill kettle boiling racer, get 2 free and also they entre you in to there free raffle for a 4th one
for free
In my day the usual arrangement was a big discount up front and a guaranteed buy back price at the end.
It’s not the same I know but car hire companies like Hertz etc get 30% off and buy back after 6 months for the same price.
Not sure on actual truck prices but all our wagon and drags are Daf and 90% of our tractors/7.5 tonners are also, with a Europewide deal on free parts for 3 years
the company that i work for ordered 50 astra vans a few months ago ,it worked out they got around 18 of them free
i would inagine that firms like stobart do get huge discounts on units so somewhere there would be a ‘free’ unit running somewhere with the savings they’ve made although buy 2 get 3rd free would have to be a deal of the year ! i learned last year when our lot bought 3 new Scania units , that we could of had 4 DAF’s for the same money ! i also notice that the transport managers have new Scania fleece’s & jackets but not the drivers
Manufacturers will push deals to gain market share, whether the vehicle was paid for or not, it still counts as a deal so pushes them up the share rankings. I think IVECO were the first to offer guaranteed buybacks, it made sense for an operator to know his rotting truck was going to be worth something in 3 years.
For the same reason many private vehicles are registered as demonstrators or courtesy cars and become VAT qualifiers, it can improve cashflow for the dealer.
I know for a fact that back a few years when HINO’s where first on the market as tractor units over here, the TM of the company I worked for was offered a Toyota Corolla free if he bought 5.
He didn’t !
my firm signs preffered supplier contracts at the moment their preffered suppliers are MAN, Mercedes, and volvo although our contract will be all Mercedes soon so I assume they get good deals out of that
Do you realy think there is that much profit for the dealers when every one is trying to do them
cheaper than the next man

I reckon many dealers are now either wholly owned or linked to the manufacturer, more so in the car world, but MAN, Renault and Volvo appear to be too.
i think scania are struggling with sales in some parts , so maybe you buy one & get 2 free, i know a few scania opperators are switching brands regardless of deals , as what you get as standard from some , you have to pay extra for with the scania, of course the recession isn’t helping for many buyers or sellers , it’s a buyers market , there’s bound to be some silly deals going around
As an ex Truck Sales Executive or salesman in laymans terms I can assure you that you will not buy two get one free, the average mark up from a dealer sale is between 1 & 5 grand, usually around 2 grand, the dealer gets bonuses from the manufacturer for meeting/exceeding sales targets, the real money for the dealer comes from these target bonuses & the icing on the cake comes through the workshop.
Manufacturers deal with big companies direct through their Fleet Sales division, this is where the all important market share is bought, I know of a haulier who used to run Scania/Volvo/Mercedes who was approached by Daf, the Daf dealer had the backing of Daf Trucks GB & told the bloke to name his price to make the deal go through, the deal was for 100+ units & he got them at a reasonable price, not much less than you’d get if you bought only one, but the deal-breaker was the offer by Daf to buy all his existing trucks at retail value & sell them back to him for a grand a piece, it worked out that he pocketed over 300 grand & had a fleet of brand new trucks in the end, nice work if you can get it
There was a rumour going round a couple of years ago when Hino made there big sales attack with the demise of fodens that a big tipper firm round our way were getting the 10th truck on every order free.
I don’t know about ‘buy two get one free’,but there are several companies starting to run Renaults for the first time down here at the moment because the dealer, apparently,is virtually giving them away just to move the stock.
A local tipper operator has just purchased a high spec,6 wheeler tipper with body for £45,000.
He’s got an equivalent Scania on an '07 plate, that cost him £80,000.
Also,Westfields, who with the exception of half a dozen Dafs, have been Scania operators from day one, have put a Magnum on the road.
