Butlers quarry,Maltby

hi chris, sorry about that yes it is pat byrne i was thinking about ken burnett a butlers driver who passed away recently, hopefully i will see pat tonight so i will ask him about a 198.struggling to get more photos so many drivers passed away i still have a few i can try fingers crossed.

Cheers for that info pity Butlers did not do a Works/Drivers photo shoot at that time? My Dad was there when Benny (Tick Tock) and Rob Clayton were Mechanics, later Benny went owner Driving. Can anyone remember Drivers Eddie Anthony and Cliff Waterhouse to? I can remember going to the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court and also to the Butlers Bonfire down Low Road, E.Butlers was a good Family firm and looked after it’s men and also their Familys…

I worked for Butlers in the late 60’s and early 70’s and William Varah Transport. The first lorry I drove was a Short wheelbase
Bedford with an Edbro steel body then I was given a Commer with wooden body John Taylor joined the company and he had the Bedford.
D.E.Aizlewood were selling agents for Butlers and at that time most of the material leaving the quarry was on their tickets
they had two salesmen Fred Higgins and I cant remember the other guy. They had no connection with Eccles or Steelphalt
Although we did deliver for Steelphalt and collected Slag from Stocksbridge to deliver to Templeborough.
The lorries were owned and operated by William Varah Transport from the Rotherham Road Site.I drove a Leyland and there were some Bedford KM’s the Dodges had gone by then .John Painter was one driver.
The site on Rotherham Road was the Bevan Boys Miners Camp which was bought and is still owned by William Varah and currently leased to Wincanton the warehouse is closed but Pullman Fleet Services VMU and Central Stores is there.
There were numerous nissen huts on the site and one or two brick buildings which were leased out. Varah’s built the Garage later used by Butlers and also the building by the roadside used by Tesco which was originally used by GEC Glass Bulbs.
When Bill Varah retired his brother in law and mechanic Harold Jarvis took over the bus and coach side of Varahs and Butlers moved into the new garage.
I remember Eddie Anthony he was a very amusing guy and about 25 others some mentioned on the forum.

well done viewmaster i knew you would get it sorted, have you anymore.what make was the dust tanker you drove.

found this bit of info.New 60m long tunnel to open up new extraction area at tarmacs magnesium limestone quarry near maltby,ex butlers quarry.Tunnel located beneath B6094 when completed later this year it will be large enough for a 4m high caterpillar 775 dumptruck to pass through. It is envisaged that the first dumptruck will be able to drive through the new tunnel by october 2011.Tarmac who employ 70 people at holme hall quarry, expect to extract approximately 34 million tonnes of limestone at the 200ha site over the next 20 years.

By Heck thats going to be some big hole. When I first went in Butlers in the 60’s you could almost throw a tennis ball
from the bunkers to the face.
I see that Tarmac have closed Lound Quarry. When I first went it was Hoveringhams. You turned in off the lane and
reversed under the bunkers they were quite low I remember.
