Bus/lorry

Hi,
I’m new here, and I wanted to ask professional drivers.
I would like to work as a lorry driver, articulated  unfortunately I don’t have licence yet, but I have a question (maybe stupid)
I have a chance to start as a trainee bus driver and wanted to ask You if there is a chance after ,for example, 3 years to get a job as a lorry driver, or maybe its easier to start on van, later lorry.
Thanks

My advice is to get your medical and theory tests out of the way first.

When you apply for your provisional licence make sure you tick all the boxes for C and D. This gives you a provisional licence for both the lorry and the bus.

Then get your mod 1a and 1b done for both C and D. The bus and lorry theory tests are separate, so you will do 1a and 1b twice, one for the lorry and one for the bus.

This is all relatively cheap, if you do it all yourself. Maybe £45 for the medical and £100 or so for all four theory tests. I don’t have up to date prices.

There’s an official DVSA theory test book and a hazard perception DVD that you can use for both the lorry and bus module 1a, module 1b, and module 2.

If you get cracking, that shouldn’t take you more than about 6 weeks. Then book your bus and rigid lorry tests with the forum sponsor.

After you have your cat C and D, book your C+E test. That will also give you D+E.

By June, you should be ready for the summer rush. Loads of agency work in June, July, and August as this is when many of the drivers take their summer holidays.

It’s quiet each year during January, February, and March. It usually picks up after Easter.

With lorry driving, make hay while the sun shines.

Thanks for reply

Theory passes only last for 2 years so if doing PCV for 3 years before doing LGV be careful when you do the LGV theory tests

I did C, CE and then did D. It seemed daft not to get D given it was essentially the same test as C. People say it’s best to do class 2 work before doing CE. I’ve only ever worked 1 day of class 2, rest class 1. Worked out ok for me doing them all at once. Means you have all the test stuff in your head.

Probably a good idea to go for the bus driving as a start, at the very least it will get you used to driving something bigger than a van which is half the battle when doing your cat C/C+E. Completely different jobs and you have to put up with all the ■■■■■■■■■ of the day. But you would get your cat D for bugger all so there’s always that.

Alternatively just get a job doing whatever for the time being and save up to put yourself through the tests.

Thanks for your comments

Thanks all for comments.
Next week I’m starting training for Class 2, but… a wee bit stressed as I’ll have a driving assessment and I have no idea what to expect?
I only know it’ll be in normal car or maybe van, as I didn’t send my licence to DVLA yet.
Maybe someone have ideas?
Thanks
