Im sure there are some ex bus drivers that have gone over to driving lorries. Can somebody confirm that if you have the C category on your licence, if you pass your D test in an automatic that you are also allowed to drive a manual
I have looked at a few training school sites and only one mentions this
Cheers Jimb0 , took this from the trainings school site.
Did You Know?
If you already hold an Automatic Bus Licence you can obtain a coach licence by taking driver training and passing your test on either on a Manual Coach or on a Lorry.
If you decide to take lorry training and test, as LGV C (HGV Class 2) trucks have manual gear boxes, not only will you obtain a lorry licence to drive a 32 tonne truck, but you’ll also ‘upgrade’ your Automatic Bus Licence to a Manual Coach Licence. But don’t forget to do this you will also need to get Provisional LGV entitlement and pass an LGV theory test before sitting your LGV Driving Test.
And of course likewise, if you have a LGV C (HGV Class 2) lorry licence already, you can get an all-types Manual Coach Licence by training and passing your test on a Automatic Bus, but again you would need to hold provisional PCV entitlement and pass a PCV theory test to do this.
Like I said this is the only place where I have seen it mentioned.
Thinking about changing over. I enjoy the driving I am doing at the moment.Just not getting enough of it.Its only Class 2 work , which, following my brief spell driving artics which didnt go too well, Im not too bothered about.
I just want a full time job to be honest, and no company I approach is willing to take me on because I dont have the experience. If a bus company is willing to train me, then I may well take them up on their offer.
Most of the large companies, Stagecoach, Arriva etc would train you.
I’ve gone back bus driving after 30 years truck driving and will probably stick it now.
I like knowing when i am going to start and finish, no hanging around etc.
Good luck
Got my licence back from DVLA today.
Had already passed Class C,C+E,sent it to DVLA after passing bus test, class D.
Licence is showing DE as provisional, was under the impression it automatically upgraded as i had C+E.
Can anybody explain?
Also, card part shows I have full D1E entitlement but paper section has it as provisional.
When they changed the catagories it was supposed to save confusion.!!
If you hold an automatic bus licence and pass a test in a manual truck it upgrades your coach licence to manual.
When you pass your C + E you pass for a C licence and an E licence so it upgrades your D licence to a D + E
In other words you have an E licence which entitles you to pull trailers - in whatever you are using to pull them.
Anybody who has a licence which is not clear should take it up with the DVLA
Marcustandy, contacted DVLA today and to be honest after the explanation I was given I’m more confused than ever.
I was told that DE was omitted from the card and shown as provisional on the paper section to show I haven’t passed a test in this category.
I am allowed to drive DE without L Plates and I can drive unsupervised.
The person I spoke to agrees C+E upgrades D to DE.
Exactly the same with D1E,because I got D1E without passing a test it shows on the paper counterpart as provisional entitlement!
The whole thing is as clear as mud.
To be honest, I’d suggest it’s time to up the ante. Next time you call, point out that following ‘legal’ (ahem! ) advice you need to speak with a supervisor who can check your licence/records and explain why you haven’t been given the same entitlement that ‘everyone’ else has (me included - I had C+E before I did D and got D+E put on my licence).
If that fails maybe a flick through the yellow pages to find some legal advice (ideally from a ‘first 30 mins free’ solicitor), even better if it is one that specialises in transport, should be your next step. For them it’s easy if the problem goes away but for you it could be difference between earning a wage to support yourself/family or not.
Marcustandy, sent DVLA an e-mail,reply suggests they may have mada a mistake.
Have posted licence back to them today.
Here’s a page I found on direct gov.(Upgrading section).
Sounds to me like you have to do it C,D,then C+E to get D+E upgrade.
They may have changed it since you did your tests. direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dr … DG_4022548
It can be the only explanation even though it doesn’t make sense.
I have just got back from working abroad and am on holiday for (at least) 3 weeks however, as soon as I go back I can check (we have a ‘direct dial’ account with DVLA). I might even venture into work sometime before then because it is bugging me!!
