Bus driving / bin Lorry driver

both of these fit the criteria I’m looking for , short hours , home every day , bus I’d need a license , no nothing of buses other than what I see out and about , bins I’ve a mate whos on them and he’s forever on about he want to earn more £££££ , when he asked to see what I earnt he was all for going on the attics , but when I explained he’d be doing 70 hours a week most weeks , nights out , silly o’clock starts he went off the idea
so can anyone tell me more about buses / bin lorries than I already know which is very little . ta

Buses and dustcarts do tend to share quite a lot of common chassis/driveline components.

TBH, most of the big bus companies don’t look to recruit professional drivers…they recruit people who can put up with people, then teach them to drive buses.

Most truck drivers became truck drivers at least in part because they didn’t want to have to deal with people all the time, so they don’t necessarily make good bus drivers.

Drive a bin lorry…you need to be able to work with a crew who get increasingly hot and smelly as the day goes on. You will be driving a large vehicle with a bin-lift hanging off the back down narrow streets lined with parked cars, and making sure you don’t hit anything/run anyone over.

So if the two jobs have anything in common (apart from fully-automatic transmissions) it is that you have to love traffic and built-up areas, and relish meeting your fellow man/woman.

Even if they stink to high heaven because either they don’t wash very often or they’ve just had a three-litre container of sour milk explode over them.

Your choice!

What exactly do you want to know about bin lorries dozy ?

Short hours on buses?

Righto…

Righto…

I’m not sure they are short hours toonsy.

My understanding is that there are a lot of split shifts on the buses and silly hours too.
Mind you, we do silly hours.

I’ve never fancied driving buses, but, would like a go at coaches.

One of my mates drives for Warrigton Borough Transport. A week of 0500-1400 then a week of 1400-2300. £10 per hour.

Buses are ■■■■, apart from putting up with the ■■■■■■■ who get on them you also have to put up with crazy shifts. Lates, earlies, splits and loads of weekend work. Rest days changing week to week. Done near 15 years on them. Awful job, would never go back to that.

Most do walking floor artics? Not the most complicated job in the world and without the need to complete rounds. Pay is moderate/ ■■■■■ but absolutely no stress!

Cargo that talks, stinks (personal hygiene), shouts at you, and sometimes attacks you - regardless if you have one of those so called protective screens…■■

Sticks a NWNF claim in for the slightest thing!?

Driving hours are different too - as in LONGER driving time with shorter breaks EVERY day!?

Driving in constant rush hour type traffic - hated more than trucks due to the constant stop / starting!?

No thanks - NEVER AGAIN!!!

Bus driving not too bad when I did it.8 to 9 hours daily over 5 days.Start off on early buses, finish off on late buses.Plenty of rest between shifts.Free transport to work. However you need the patience of a saint. Some passengers can be cranky or plain rude and will report you if you react. Then you have school kids in afternoons, mummy’s little darlings one and all.Evenings running throught scrote filled estates.Deep joy.Never have your window open and be prepared for objects being thrown at windscreen or through doors.Eggs, water filled bags,bricks.etc.What’s not to like.

This. It’s not always the way job people think. When I did it many years ago we had one 14 hour shift with one 30 minute break in the middle and 5 minutes here and there at bus stops if you could make up some time

My last job was with a pallet system company. I mostly drove an 18 tonner delivering and collecting pallets around the same area and largely to the same regular customers. The money wasn’t great but the work was easy and I was home for dinner nearly every night. Occasionally I did an evening run up to the Hub, slept in the truck and then ran back in the morning. No weekends unless I volunteered.

On this type of work, most of the load will be put on/taken off by FLT’s. There will also be some TL deliveries using a pump truck, and the occasional handball. I would say that it is far better than driving a bin lorry or a bus and there is usually less pressure than you get on skips.
