Bus driver banned for hitting level crossing barriers

A bus driver in London has been sentenced to a 15 month driving ban and 150 hours unpaid work for driving through a level crossing when the lights were flashing and breaking off one of the barriers as they were descending.

He was returning to the depot at the end of his shift and the video shows him accelerating towards the crossing after he turned into the road when the wig-wags were already flashing.

A moment of rushing and misjudgement we all do it and did it the difference is he got caught that’s all harsh penalty for it

It’s Tottenham so no surprise there…Emil Koranteng of Clinton Road, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving. :unamused:

Misjudgment?

Yes, we’ve all put our foot down on amber. This guy crossed the red 8 seconds or more after the amber! The barriers start to fall before he’s even on the crossing. He then tries to swerve round them, but he was literally caught by the barrier!

It’s like saying charging through a red light, and actually being sideswiped by another vehicle, is a mere misjudgment. This was criminal!

I have put my foot down on amber traffic lights…never on a level crossing. I’ve seen those Russian videos!

There was no “misjudgement”, the red wig-wags were flashing before he entered the road with the level crossing, and the amber light was visible to the driver before that.
He accelerated towards the crossing and crossed the stop line eight seconds after the red lights had been lit.

It was a deliberate act to try to beat the barriers coming down, even though he was some distance away and driving a double decker bus.

Damaging the barrier would have resulted in the road being closed to all traffic until Network Rail had replaced it and trains would have had to run through at a very low speed. So his moment of stupidity might seem like some minor damage, but it would have inconvenienced many people’s journeys.

He was lucky it was a manually controlled crossing and the protecting signals wouldn’t have been cleared when he caused the damage, so trains could have been stopped safely.
If he did that on an automatic half barrier crossing he could have caused the damaged barrier to end up in the path of a train which would have no way of being stopped.

Somewhat ironically, the level crossing in question was permanently closed to road traffic about a month after this incident occurred, as part of a project to add an extra track to the railway.

I like the first one where the idiot gets out and staggers about looking for the rest of his motor, but I love the second one with the ‘how to drop a trailer instructional.’

Misjudgement? He turned right or left into road 150 metres to barriers warning lifts flashing …, and he deliberately goes through.

His depot was literally 200 metres away at Northumberland park. He gets paid to sign on at a particular time. It’s not like truck driving, they have a time table set breaks turn around etc. he should of gone to prison for attempted dangering life.

A few died in that first one, including the train driver IIRC.
